      Critics Consensus

A mawkish melodrama that means less the more it tries to say, Life Itself suggests writer-director Dan Fogelman's talents are best suited to television.

Al G Can't believe how much the critics hated on this movie. It was a decent story with top talent actors. I definitely recommend. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/24 Full Review Michelle S The critics gave Avengers: End Game a 93% and this has 13%? Maybe it doesn't have enough action scenes and catchphrases haha. It's absolutely worth a watch. There are loose ends and maybe lacking in some development, but I would watch it again. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Thomas H I just read the reviews and they are horrific for this caliber of a movie. I absolutely love the movie and think that they did a phenomenal job and kind of prove the point of the unreliable narrator, because if you think about it, the narrator goes from second person to third person to first whole, while having a very good and emotional plot line. This week contradict the initial theory from the 19th century that an unreliable narrator has to be a first person. I think a lot of the negative reviews are people who didn't fully understand it, and would be better off watching the Marvel movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review chessey p Loved this movie and the way everything came together at the end... a real tear jerker... ❤️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review John M GREAT MOVIE HELPS U UNDERSTAND HOW LIFE WORKS AND HOW SOMEHOW LOVE PREVAILS…! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/26/23 Full Review Terry H This is why I don't trust critics. How could they get this so wrong. What a really beautiful movie. A series of short "human" stories that are intertwined with each other. Each one captivating. Well written, and well-acted. Really is a hidden gem of a movie. Robbie Collin Kermode & Mayo's Film Review Every big dramatic moment is sapped of all its energy entirely. Jan 12, 2019 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) The film's indulgences are so heart-on-sleeve that it's hard to differentiate watching it from hearing someone pitch their very bad screenplay ideas with no attempt to read the room... Rated: 1/5 Jan 6, 2019 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Despite the suffering ladled on to the characters, I remained stonily unmoved throughout. Rated: 1/5 Jan 5, 2019 Full Review Ryan McQuade InSession Film The most insulting and manipulative movie of the year. Rated: F Apr 3, 2024 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Life Itself is too self-indulgent, sappy, and overly sentimental for its own good. By the last third, it becomes manipulative and even tedious. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 16, 2022 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse The film from This is Us guru Dan Fogelman is a Xerox of his TV show. Grab some Kleenexes and cue the schmaltz.
