Stefan Kanfer TIME Magazine There are some men whose tragedy arises not from what they suffer but what they fail to feel. Little Fauss and Big Halsy are such men -- and so are those who made the movie. Jul 22, 2013 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times In this context it is difficult to understand character or admire characterization. Rated: 2/5 Jul 22, 2013 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Hampered by a thin screenplay, film is padded further by often-pretentious direction by Sidney J. Furie against expansive physical values. Jul 22, 2013 Full Review Richard Schickel LIFE It's a fine, tough, funny movie, distinguished by Furie's extraordinary feel for empty spaces and the empty people that inhabit them, by strong acting, most of all by the success with which it makes an unfamiliar milieu familiar. Aug 30, 2019 Full Review TV Guide Little Fauss and Big Halsy is a mixed bag, with a helter skelter plot but nicely coordinated motorcycle action and some good background music by Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Bob Dylan. Blu B The whole thing is a vibe type of road movie that's not about the destination necessarily but the journey there. Kind of like The Straight Story in a sense. It also oozes New Hollywood with the type of unconventional duo it stars and the gritty film and on location settings. That being said, even the best vibing type of films have a bit more structure than this and the direction isn't consistent enough to make something like this work as evenly throughout as it needs to be to be good throughout. The characters are challenging for different reasons. Halsy has charisma and sex appeal but he's a muscle headed jerk. And Fauss is more likeable of the two but he can be so wooden a times and just lacking any sort of prescene. They are interesting when they are together though and the vibes it gives off a times are unique and it does keep you wondering where it's going. But honestly, I'm not even sure this knew where it was going. It ends after some semblance of an arc for both of them but I'm not sure what the point was in the grand scheme. Odd Couple type movies from this time like Bonnie & Clyde, Harold & Maude, Butch Cassidy & Sundance, all have more goals to them and more likeable characters despite having the same level of flaws these two have. I think that's the biggest issue here for better or worse. The soundtrack with Cash is good but I wish it was used a bit more. The editing is alright enough but again it can feel like stuff just happens at times, and even when it doesn't it is very clunky or incomplete in inking everything together. Everything else though is half decent for the reasons meantioned above. Pollard & Redford have a weird kind of chemistry. It's very odd...like the nerd in school teaming up with the football team QB. I don't really know how else to describe it. And the direction at times is good but other times it just dissappears as well. The racing feels like almost an afterthought here despite there being plenty of it. It just feels like the racing isn't set up well but it's cool watching them actually do it. But again it doesn't really tie into much in the grand scheme either so it's not really for racing fans either. I think if your either a die hard fan of any actors in this or if you want a really offbeat sort of buddy road movie New Hollywood style maybe give this a shot. This isn't for everyone though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/25 Full Review Shioka O With this poor rate, no-one expect anything from this film, and actually it's not unwatchable. Tbh, I don't hate this another forgotten New Hollywood. Harmless and nothing happen. The ending is sketchy. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/11/22 Full Review Audience Member For those who remembers TNT's movies for guys, this movie fits the bill. The main theme is how to avoid friends who take advantage of others and how others should not be guillible to believe these friends. Sometimes one have to take a stand to avoid people taking advantage of one's good nature. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review delysid d given the low score, you would think this is a bad movie or something. it's actually great Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/05/22 Full Review Audience Member It is a cult! Fast bikes, naked girls, classic characters, what else do you want? A must watch! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a guy's flick. Period. If you happen to be from No. CA, and were of Nam draft age, road bikes hard, did the same to chicks; like wildness and yet are sensitive, hate authority and BS, then this mixed bag is nostalgic to the hilt. A chilling short shot of an aircraft carrier leaving S.F. near the Golden Gate defies all the gaffs and goofiness. Good acting and out of character for both these dudes..(particularly the green-weenie nowadays "Halsy." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
