Despite many good scenes of whimsy, humor, and pathos, not to mantion great mimicry of Garland, Dietrich, and others, the movie is trying to do too much and the last reel is weak, contrived and burdened with a fake romance and upbeat ending.

Horrocks and Blethyn are phenomenal (obviously) and they almost make this work but the movie ultimately has too many unearned moments (i.e. Caine's breakdown scene).

Not one of the finest British comedies from 30 years ago. Almost has a glum attitude about it. Harrock is an appealing lead no doubt. Sad to say it leads to a bummer of a conclusion.
