Sheri Linden The Hollywood Reporter A meandering journey, too tepid to stir up the feelings of yearning and rebellion that it aims to evoke. Aug 22, 2017 Full Review Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times With a resume primarily populated by documentary films, two-time Oscar winner Sanders might be forgiven for issues with script and actors, but even the basics of filmmaking, such as editing and camerawork fall short. Aug 17, 2017 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times The question of whether the couple will consummate their relationship isn't a sufficient source of tension. Aug 17, 2017 Full Review Barbara Shulgasser Common Sense Media Tender coming-of-age tale has language, drugs, and sex. Rated: 3/5 Aug 27, 2020 Full Review Chloe Walker Film Inquiry As a coming-of-age tale, Liza, Liza, Skies Are Grey is inoffensive, as a reminiscence of the Cold War years, it's inert, as a whole it's completely inconsequential. Aug 29, 2017 Full Review André Hereford Film Journal International Drifting unsurely from scenes of the couple's fairytale, lovestruck bliss to moments of gritty, grindhouse suspense, Liza, Liza doesn't cohere in tone or purpose. Emily R Liza, Liza, Skies Are Grey is a tender, nostalgic reminder of what it feels like to be young, brave, and searching for freedom. Terry Sanders’ direction captures the bittersweet innocence of first love against the backdrop of a shifting America. Mikey Madison gives a luminous performance as Liza, vulnerable yet strong, and the cinematography makes every frame look like a memory you can almost touch. It’s quiet and poetic, the kind of film that stays with you long after it ends. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
