What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's fun to see Greta Gerwig mature her acting career but Lola Versus -- with its unpleasant characters and completely familiar script -- does not succeed as her first major leading role.

Chase Whale Film.com LOLA VERSUS puts the fun in dysfunctional love and is what happens when you shake life up a little bit and let it fall out of your hands. Nov 8, 2013 Full Review Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) [An] hour and a half of wearisome quirk and smut... Rated: 2/5 Jul 22, 2012 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Gerwig's dreamy style worked in Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress, because the movie created an eco-system of oddity in which that style could thrive. But here it just grates. Rated: 2/5 Jul 19, 2012 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk For all Gerwig's undoubted charisma, Lola Versus too often resembles an extended episode of Friends without the laughs. Dec 15, 2020 Full Review Sarah Gopaul Digital Journal Lola Versus is a smart comedy propelled by the chemistry of two entertaining actors. steve d The script is simply OK, but Gerwig is as great as ever. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review kevin c Lola, played by Greta Gerwig, seems to be going down the perfect path for a happy life, she's engaged to the love of her life, played by Joel Kinnaman, but as the wedding approaches he changes his mind and breaks up with her. Leading her down a path to find out who she is and what makes her happy. Gerwig is fantastic and natural in this role. Moments of humor and heartache are aplenty. Bill Pullman and Debra Winger costar. I enjoyed this one as Will any fan of Gerwig. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The film has its own poetry, the comedy part is subtle. All the actors' performances are cohesive. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review lanfranco c She is really a complicated girl. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Complètement ridicule comme film... boring boring, la fille fait Les mêmes erreurs, Elle est juste conne finalement. Rien d'extraordinaire, mais vraiment rien. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Such a god damn irritating movie!!!! Just another New York film that thinks its so clever and so observant when its just modern and biased bullshit. The characters are annoying, the performances are way below decent, the writing is boring and familiar and the direction is terribly bland. When this movie wanted to be funny I wasn't amused... when this movie wanted to be taken seriously I rolled my eyes and when this movie wanted to be thought provoking I was thinking about how long I have to watch as many episodes of Gavin and Stacey as possible to wash out the bad taste that Lola Versus smashed on to my tongue within the first 10 minutes of the film.
