Keith Uhlich Time Out Despite its overall lightheartedness, it now seems like one of [Hal Ashby]'s major works. Rated: 5/5 Sep 6, 2020 Full Review Joseph Jon Lanthier Slant Magazine Hal Ashby and Jon Voight sadly exhume the rigid, malodorous corpse of the '60s to kiss it on the lips and stuff some 50-dollar bills in its sphincter. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 27, 2009 Full Review Richard Corliss TIME Magazine The picture is a sloppy mess that stumbles toward oblivion like a drunk on a losing streak. Oct 31, 2007 Full Review Adam Lippe Examiner.com Ashby's instincts are so off throughout Lookin' To Get Out that he only accentuates his major weaknesses as a filmmaker - plot twists, slapstick, chase sequences and lots of screaming that eschews any character development or scenes of insight. Jun 13, 2012 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Moronic comedy that's pleasant enough until it runs out of steam in the third act. Rated: C+ Sep 12, 2011 Full Review Kevin Carr 7M Pictures While I understand and somewhat respect the apparent improv style for this movie, it did tend to lend itself to redundant and useless dialogue. Blu B No wonder Jon Voight never did another screenplay ever again...this is like a first SUPER rough draft of a Heist movie done while half asleep. The music is the best thing...and it's bad. It's barely used outside of a handful of scenes and isn't anywhere near enough and it's so out of place. Everything else man is horrically bad. The dialouge (even though this came first) is trying to be like a Quintin Tarintino movie and it never comes close. The dialouge is so meandering, unclear, nonstop, unfunny, and sometimes I just don't know. It makes it so you can barely tell anything about the characters involved because most scenes it's them talking so if you don't understand what there talking about your lost most of the time. It took all my brain power to put together the basic premise there in debt and trying to rob the casino. I should'nt have to feel like I'm doing a research paper to figure out the basic premise of a heist movie. It feels like stuff just happens despite for the most part being focused on Voight. I don't get the love interest, The guy who has the heart attack, the plot twist of him surviving, I truly don't. The climax was just a whole lot of nothing and it feels like the whole film was completely pointless because they don't even pull off a heist the other guy gets it. It's just stuff happening like chases, fights, shows, love triangles, and it never adds up to a cohesie story. On top of that the Ashby touch is almost completely lacking. Save for the bathroom stall scene which was a glimmer of Ashby. The setting is nice, the camerawork is alright, and the actors got some chemistry. It's just I have no idea what there talking about or how it all adds up. Skip this Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/06/24 Full Review Audience Member This one is BAD. It's very slow paced The most memorable thing is that you get to see Angelina Jolie in her first acting role at the age of 7. I did like the the last 20 minutes, but the rest of the movie sucks. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member another winner from Ashby Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie begins with what might be the worst opening credits I have ever seen. I mean they are absolutely hideous. The film is too long for such a simple plot, the ending is easily predictable, and all of the bit parts are total amateur. Jon Voight ventures from the norm to play an over the top kooky degenerate gambler who gets into a world of trouble. He is actually pretty entertaining, as his character is affable and laughing all the time. I rate this movie 48/100 Review # 8 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member There's a lot of bad reviews for the orginal version of this film. I saw the extended version which was what Hal Ashby turned in before the studio cut out 14 minutes. While this is not a great film it is a bizarrely interesting one. Jon Voight wrote the script which allows him to chew the scenery at every turn while Burt Young plays his buddy in one of his best turns outside a "Rocky" movie. As he says about Voight's character, "I think he's wrong but he's my friend. I take the good with the bad." Ann-Margret looks great back in Vegas for the first time since "Viva Las Vegas" and one does get to see young Angelina Jolie, who looks to be about all of five years old here. Also some good shots of Vegas in the early 1980's. One question I did keep asking though: "Didn't Casinos have security back int he 1980's"? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the lost treasures of Hal Ashby, if you have seen his films watching this one isn't no different and that is a good thing. It's amazing watching this movie how so many have stole from this movie. Watched the uncut or I suppose the Director's cut I can't see how this movie didn't do well but then I never seen the studio cut either. It's not a 5 star movie but it certainly makes for a 4 star movie, built for Ashby fans and for people looking for a good movie with a nice plot.
