Audience Member The intention is in the right place, but the execution leaves something to be desired. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member The screen-play was converted from the stage play. The film is set in a Vegas video poker bar. And since it originated as a play, the bar is the only set. Despite that and despite its methodical pace, this indie film is spellbinding, nearly hypnotic. Characters are introduced one at a time and the writing and acting is so good, we quickly sense the character of each player. Still, there are surprises along the way. Bartender Kieran (Kendall Pigg) is the perfect host, indulging his patrons quirks and insults like a gracious host. Despite the insults he endures, he somehow retains his dignity while remaining polite and helpful. Of course, he has problems of his own which don't become apparent until near the end. This film is about troubled people, compulsive gamblers in particular, who wrestle with demons, most of which reside in their own hearts and heads. This is a dialogue driven drama which allows long periods of silence between conversations, allowing the viewer to consider the implications of what was said. If you are only entertained by fast cars, cops and robbers, and special effects, you may be bored. On the other hand, if you appreciate great writing, excellent performances, which show the depths of humanity in realistic candor, this film may be for you.
