Lousy Carter might be a reminder that middle age is filled with monotony and unsolvable problems, but that doesn’t mean our movies have to be. Go to Full Review

It’s a terrific performance, one that speaks volumes even as it explores the acute limits of Lousy’s emotional intelligence. Go to Full Review

Turn the concept of a laugh-out-loud comedy inside-out and you’ll have a feel for Byington’s sense of humor: a sustained cruel hum, the room tone of a crypt. Go to Full Review

Lousy Carter earns its title. It’s a cynical, depressing outing that, like its anti-hero protagonist, fundamentally lacks self-awareness. Go to Full Review

David Krumholtz excels in Austin auteur Bob Byington’s Lousy Carter... it’s a termite treasure that still tickles plenty with another stellar Byington male worm, ideally embodied by the underrated Krumhol Go to Full Review

Not W Sep 7 I think the movie is making fun of academia. I disagree with it being about middle-age since it addresses the main character and his friends, but also his mother and student. I feel they are all overly educated, self-centered, share a victim mentality, and do nothing productive or helpful to society. I think the old high school buddy represents the common man whom the main character looks down upon and ignores. I liked the movie, I found it funny, but never laughed. See more Cali C 11/30/2024 Very Louie Cki-sh humor. Nuff said. See more Alec B 09/07/2024 Krumholtz is great and I think the movie has the right sardonic tone. I'm not sure if the ending is earned but at least it's an interesting swing for the fences. See more Alex D 09/05/2024 Really enjoyed the film - the dry humor and mild absurdity throughout made me laugh. I liked seeing David Krumholtz in a smaller film after just seeing him in Oppenheimer. Also reminded me that I should read the Great Gatsby again. See more Inner E 09/04/2024 Wonderful comedy, further proof of what we already knew: the talent of Bob Byington, one of those few directors with his own universe. See more Juan Manuel D 08/30/2024 For decades, Bob Byington's cinema has been a comedy that, with its man-children (here the glory partly belongs to David Krumholtz), plays with language like no one else. The universality of the formula ("a pathetic being discovers he has only months to live") serves as an excuse for his absurd ping-pong, showcasing his verbal sparring, which isn't about speed but about exposing the world (both the cinematic one and the other) through his surgical and absurd deadpan. Where Byington strikes, like good termite comedy, he reveals the flaws of an increasingly pathetic American cinema, one that is becoming more fossilized in the eyes of those who watch, buy, and program it.
