Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member tfw you kinda relate to Lovecraft Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Documentary about one of most (maybe THE most) influential horror author. A bit lacking on research and facts (Lovecraft was not exactly a social person) instead filled with praises from Gaiman, Carpenter and others. But it's maybe the only big documentary about the author, so if you're interested you don't have much choice... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member A retelling of lovecraft's life through interviews with some famous writters and directors. The whole thing is unfortunately very dry and empty in what it has to offer. You get a full retelling of his life while fan art related to the stories being talked about shown on screen. The ending of the movie touches on the immortal impact of the Cthulhu on pop culture but doesnt go deep into it at all. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Being a longtime H.P. Lovecraft fan I was very interested to see a documentary about the man and his work. This doco is very insightful and interviews many experts in the field of supernatural and horror genres in print and film. My only complaint is that it is too short and can not go into as much depth story wise and leaves out some of his important work "The Dreamquest of unknown Kadath" all together. So, overall, a really interesting doco about a very interesting man. If you like this writer, I highly recommend it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Just like I'm waiting for the "ultimate" Lovecraft movie, I will continue to wait for the ultimate Lovecraft documentary - but this is a fine effort. Perhaps like pronouncing the name of Cthulu, or viewing The Color From Outer Space, a proper Lovecraft depiction/adaptation isn't achievable by mere mortals. The biggest flaw, is I do not understand why some documentaries [or books for that matter] feel the need to do lengthy synopses of the actual work. Why not read the actual book? Is anyone actually going to watch this if they haven't read the stories, or aren't planning on reading them asap? On a positive note, there are some great interviews with Lovecraft champions like Stuart Gordon, Guillermo Del Toro, Neil Gaiman, John Carpenter, Peter Straub, and others. There is also an adequate and fine linear Lovecraft biography here. It could have been improved by inserting even more biographical anecdotes from Lovecraft's extensive correspondence, and his wife's memoirs. Something tells me the ultimate Lovecraft doc will happen before the ultimate film adaptation. If that film happened in my lifetime, my money's on Stuart Gordon, produced by Guillermo Del Toro. [P.S. Check out Gordon's Dagon, an overlooked horror film]. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
