Audience Member Ben Keller (Colin Hanks) has just won the Iowa State Lotto. The catch? The winning ticket belongs to Leslie Singer, the dead girl in his closet. With $36 million now at his disposal, Ben has the newfound confidence to pursue his life-long crush, Lucy St. Martin (Ari Graynor). But can all the money in the world compensate for the fact that Ben is a fledgling serial killer? As their relationship spirals out of control and the body count rises, Lucy and Ben do all they can to survive love, marriage, and each other. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Strange but oke movie , a bit funny , and a bit of suspence . For me Lucy also should be killed because of her moneycrabbing thoughts ! One of Colin's better movies so far . Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Very odd. Can't connect to anyone and they don't connect with each other. Interesting concepts buried within. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member It's almost as if someone had asked what would happen if Norman Bates won the lottery when conjuring up the premise to this film. Hanks is the socially awkward serial killer who suddenly finds himself the owner of 36 million, and the girl of his dreams (Graynor), who really is into him just for the money. Hanks and Graynor are good, and the script does have some effective moments of madcap comedy, but it's all drawn out a little too thinly after a while, while nothing else about the film is particularly remarkable. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Black comedy is a really hard thing to do. So many films are able to nail that balance between darkness and humor to make the comedy work. Lucky is not one of those films. It takes an interesting premise, about a serial killer who wins the lottery, and makes a mostly lifeless film with uninteresting characters and an unfulfilled promise. Lucky attempts to be a dark comedy by presenting these amoral characters doing amoral or horrible things. Yet weirdly it also attempts to endear us to these characters by making them quirky and charming. It's these two contradictions that make so much of the comedy fall flat. The film lacks the courage to actually make the most of it's lurid premise. It actually seems to forget or ignore that the lead character is a serial killer. So Lucky tries to be a black comedy without bringing all the darkness that comes with. Only a few scenes actually deliver the black humor promised by it's premise. The rest of it's attempts are awfully desperate or simply unpleasant. It doesn't help that none of the stars have any chemistry with each other. Unfortunately, Lucky is an interesting premise that suffers from a lack of any bite. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Black comedy is a really hard thing to do.
