Mason M I really enjoyed the filmmaker's later Lynch documentary, The Art Life. And I love Inland Empire, but this was just a disappointment. This is slow, uninteresting, and not very insightful into David Lynch Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Audience Member A bizarre & unusual documentary that doesn't have any other goal but just too simply show David Lynch in all his calmness & craziness. It shows many sides of his personality but fails to grip with no structure what so ever and that may appeal to die hard fans of Lynch. The film mainly focuses on him filming Inland Empire his longest & in my opinion more bizarre film. I really appreciate David Lynch as an artist but failed to appreciate this piece on him. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I was really disappointed with this. Pretty as a Picture and dozens of others offer more insight into the art of Lynch and scratches the surface of how he works..this doesn't really. While it features a few interesting scenes that are you classic Davey, it just doesn't hold up, especially to Lynch 2 on the Inland Empire DVD. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Undeniably the best David Lynch documentary. The cameras follow Lynch first on a photography project, painting, while he runs his website, but then also making "Inland Empire". The film is pure insight into the creative man's thought process. Missing though is meditation which is talked about, but not fully shown. There's one thing for certain while watching it: The man isn't crazy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member The Unknown director ,black AND white, forgets that Documentary films have to have some form of Narrative to keep the Audience Interests. Lynch is typical strange as he is, but that is basically all it is. We don't learn anything new about him and find some form of connection the director. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review walter m With the exception of providing his birthdate and place and a couple of anecdotes about his time spent in Philadelphia, this engaging documentary is not so much concerned with the past career of David Lynch as it is about the present in the big build-up to Bastille Day 2005. While he has given up film in favor of digital video, this documentary is filmed with different cameras and almost mimics the style of his films in its rambling discourse. "Lynch" shows the director not only making art, including photographing abandoned factories but also behind the scenes of his latest film, "Inland Empire," while not explaining what it is actually about which still confuses me. Actually, I was surprised none of Lynch's hostility towards Hollywood is on display here that I found implied in his last two films, as he seems quite happy with his life while enjoying various projects which he puts down to transcendental meditation, not chain smoking. But I was disappointed that he does not drink any coffee in the film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
