DanTheMan 2 Slightly disappointed given how much I admired Don't Look Now… We’re Being Shot At! as in stark contrast The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob flounders around for most of its runtime with its main plot not even kicking off until the 1-hour mark. Rabbi Jacob spends a large amount of time off camera, the film instead focuses on Louis de Funès' Victor Pivert, a bigoted businessman who, through a comedy of errors, finds himself stranded in the French countryside. He finds himself unintentionally stumbling into a plot from an unnamed Middle Eastern nation trying to assassinate a revolutionary leader in exile. It's a solid premise for a comedy and there are some well-done antics involving major set pieces at a bubblegum factory, an airport and a Jewish community, the problem stems from the fact the film is largely directionless for most of its runtime despite some strong visuals and a genuinely hilarious De Funès, even if he spends a bit too long mugging the camera in certain situations. Despite not being blown away like my previous Gérard Oury viewing, The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob is an acceptable farcical comedy with tight pacing and strong gags but occasionally undermines itself with the overuse of mugging and pantomime for humour. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Aender S One of the best films with Louis de Funès. He's in an olympian form in this one. A very re-watchable movie too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Marc Z This is a crazy, but highly watchable French comedy starring Louis de Funes in a film with several intersecting plot lines revolving around a NYC Orthodox Rabbi's visit to his cousin in France. De Funes is a bit of Charlie Chaplin and a bit of Benny Hill in this one. There are many very funny sight gags around his incidental involvement with the French mafia. The characters are colorful. The gags are silly, and somewhat predictable, but they will ,male you laugh. The film is too politically incorrect, filled with racist and anti-semitic punch lines around De Funes' character; however m the film is not racist. De Funes' behavior is the joke. This one is a great way to gain insight into French comedy, through one its stars of the 1970's. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/09/23 Full Review Audience Member "The Mad Adventures of 'Rabbi' Jacob" (with his very smart screenplay) is so funny. One of the best french comedy of all times Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Slapstick Louis de Funes film is contrived but sometimes very funny.
