But nighttime is when Mike really gets to display his many talents: He's the hot headliner in an all-male revue. Mike sees potential in a 19-year-old he dubs the Kid (Alex Pettyfer), takes the teen under his wing and instructs him in the tricks of the trade. However, Mike learns there's a downside to the stripper lifestyle when it threatens his romance with the Kid's sister.

The stripping scenes have all the energy, what happens in between is quickly forgotten.

"Magic Mike" starts with Joanna(Olivia Munn) having to go commando that day due to the raucous events of the night before where neither her nor Mike(Channing Tatum) can remember the name of the women they had sex with. For his day job, Mike works as a roofer where he meets 19-year old Adam(Alex Pettyfer) who got the job on Craigslist and promptly loses it when he is caught stealing soda. Luckily enough, Adam gets another job when Mike hires him to do odd jobs at the strip club where he dances at night. And then Dallas(Matthew McConaughey) taps Adam to fill in for another dancer... First, "Magic Mike" is about male strippers in Tampa. And...well, to be honest, the movie forgets to be about anything else except playing the Peter Pan card in using the phrase '30-year old male stripper' as the gravest of insults while warning about the dangers of bad credit working in a cash business. But none of that should be a huge problem as long as one declares everything to the IRS. All of which is massively ironic considering Matthew McConaughey takes the time and the movie to give the younger actors, especially the bland Channing Tatum, acting lessons. Like I always say, if you have it, flaunt it.

Classic Sodebergh dialog. The pacing is a bit odd, but so is reality, and I think that's basically the point. Despite Mathhew Moconaghey(sp.) having a large role in the film, I enjoyed it.

The phrase 'don't judge a book by its cover' should be applied to Magic Mike. On the surface it may come off as an attempt for women to just get their beefcake fix, but underneath, it's endearing, engaging and tasteful. Channing Tatum is in the lead role, but he has a pretty decent group of supporting actors who come in under the radar like Olivia Munn and Matthew McConaughey. Nobody else is asked to do much else. A small side note; Kevin Nash might be the worst male stripper in the history of male stripping. No idea why he was given that part. As far as the story goes, the writing is clever. It has a very casual feel of how conversations would actually go. Steven Soderbergh is known for some interesting films, but this one is straight forward enough without much fluctuation. My only gripe was WHICH storyline was supposed to be the main one. Is it Tatum's character and his pursuit for independence? Is it Tatum's love life? Is it a drug/gangster flick? I won't say I hated it, but I also didn't think it was anything spectacular. The great thing is, all the women they cast as extras in the film (along with the stars) are just as attractive looking for the guys as the main cast is for the ladies.
