Carlos Aguilar Los Angeles Times Even if some segments are invigoratingly thought-provoking in the same manner that a young student feels engaging with classical thinkers for the first time, the format's lack of stimuli beyond cutting between speakers soon turns tedious Apr 8, 2021 Full Review A.A. Dowd AV Club Was it possible, [ filmmaker Cristi] Puiu purportedly asked, to make something dramatically compelling out of a collection of dense, highbrow conversations? Malmkrog suggests the answer may be a resounding "Nyet." Rated: C+ Apr 2, 2021 Full Review A.O. Scott New York Times Imagine a Chekhov play without drama, an Oscar Wilde farce without humor, a Visconti film without desire, or a very long party at the home of a distant acquaintance, and you will have some idea of "Malmkrog," Cristi Puiu's latest film. Apr 1, 2021 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Malmkrog is, in its own stubbornly committed way, the most “relevant” movie I watch during this parodic festival season. Nov 29, 2022 Full Review Paula Arantzazu Ruiz Cinemanía (Spain) In Malmkrog [Director Cristi Puiu] backslides into the poetics of confinement in order to, with different narrative pretensions, amplify its metaphorical power. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 Sep 29, 2021 Full Review Evan Morgan In Review Online Malmkrog's dialogue elucidates precious little about time, place or character, and ... plays, finally, like another tired feat of performance art masochism Jun 6, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Genuinely sophisticated (based on the ideas of Russian philosopher Vladimir Soloviev) the film is basically the reflection of the Soloviev's "Three talks..." book. The ideas are presented to a viewer through complex conversations about God, life meaning, war and peace, compassion and many others. One can be really baffled by the complexity of philosophical reflections, but at the same time the movie provides a viewer with a stunning picture, gorgeous ensemble cast and a meticulous (the film's running time is 3 and a half hours) depiction of a 19th century manor and social interaction happening there.
