Grant Watson Fiction Machine There is a poor narrative focus in the screenplay, which forces the film to witter away its core strengths in favour of unresolved romantic melodramas. Nick F Robert Mitchum was a major Hollywood star and while often his acting seemed rather passive, he still exuded huge charisma and was always compelling to watch. A fine example is his role in this 1955 Western, Man With The Gun. Mitchum plays Clint Tollinger, a town-taming gunfighter often hired to bring law and order to towns where the local sheriff had lost control. This film sees him ride into Sheridan City – ambitiously named as it is just a one-street town - where the local sheriff and town elders are powerless against a band of land-grabbing outlaws. A further complication is that Mitchum’s estranged wife (Jan Sterling) runs the town saloon and as she left him because she didn’t like him risking his life as a town-tamer, a reconciliation looks unlikely. Mitchum barely changes facial expression during this film, yet is still a compelling and powerful presence, and the tension mounts towards an inevitable showdown between him and the outlaws, lead by Jeff Castle (John Lupton) and a gang which includes Western stalwart Claude Akins. Man With The Gun is a solid traditional-style Western with strong performances from all the cast, a tense finale, and Mitchum displaying the star-quality that enabled him to become a Hollywood legend. REVIEWED by Nick Fletcher Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/02/25 Full Review David P A man with a gun, Robert Mitchum, and the law man, Burt Lancaster, are two gritty westerns that I would recommend to anyone who still likes watching westerns from the 50s and 60s. Two of my favorites I own both. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Aldo G Mitchum plays a proficient gunman who finds jobs as a temporary deputy in towns overcome by corruption and debauchery. It's no accident that his last job is in a town where his estranged wife and child are located. Mitchum's character faces gunslingers and moral dilemma's in this well made Western.
