David Ansen Newsweek The good news is that once the gears of the plot kick in, Allen's expert comic timing proves as beguiling as ever. Mar 4, 2019 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Nobody labors quite like Woody Allen to produce a modest entertainment. Rated: B Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out A movie inspired by movie escapism. Minor, but surprisingly, almost defiantly upbeat. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The philosophy-free plot, as lightweight as a lemon meringue pie, recalls (to paraphrase Stardust Memories) Allen's early, funny pictures. Rated: 3/4 Sep 1, 2021 Full Review Sergio Benítez Espinof 'Manhattan Murder Mystery' is the film made by the filmmaker who hits the excellence with various casting choices. Jerod S What a bore of a comedy. I didn't think Allen or Keaton were cute with their neurotic personalities trying to figure out the possible murder next door. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/29/24 Full Review Vincenzo R Allen offers us credible and lively characters, through a successful alternation of supence and comic scenes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/27/23 Full Review Kevin L Well that was a lotta fun. Not sure why I hadn't seen that one sooner. This is funniest movie since the great "Broadway Danny Rose". Once again, he's paired with the wonderful Diane Keaton, and their chemistry together was still evident. Add in some fine supporting cast work by the likes of Jerry Adler, Angelica Houston, and Alda and you have a real winner in this wacky murder mystery. The twists and surprises are all cleverly written and well timed. The pacing is good throughout as there are so many moments of a sound, a visual, or a thought that might lead the would-be sleuths to the answer(s) they were searching for, that we don't really have any extraneous scenes where things drag. And I loved the homage to "The Lady From Shanghai" in the theater near the end. Very cool stuff, Allen. Had this been written when Allen was still in his prime with his concentration more of comedy, I believe some of the attempts at humour would've worked better and made that aspect of the film stronger; probably a 4-star film. As it is, though, it's still great fun and I'll give it 3.8 stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Shioka O Adults being fun. A little pleasure to see this incident in the city goes far within the circle. Woody Allen's crime film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/22 Full Review david f Funny movie, loving portrait of New York, and very entertaining, this Woody Allen picture doesn't go too deep but it has a busy murder mystery plot, great upper class New Yorkers hanging out, and lots of great comedy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Contrived, meandering, and with a certain nostalgic fancy, this is nothing special. The comedy is eye-rolling, often hand-in-hand with overacting. It's the kind of movie your grandparents would dream up, fancying themselves as delivering something engaging and funny.
