Late R Bringing together subtle humour and drama in the form of a situation that turns the main character's life upside down, forcing her to focus on herself after years of self-neglect and living for others, ‘Maria (and Everybody Else)' comes with a sense of realism and has a good deal of authentic-feeling moments. It does well not to fall into the trap of being too melodramatic. That being said, there's only so much drama you can really wring out of the situation before you feel like they've made the point, and instead of moving onto what should be the next chapter in the character's life, it lingers forever and wallows in the character's despair. It feels like it drags a little because of it; nevertheless, thanks to Barbara Lennie's superb performance, watching our protagonist struggle with coming to terms with change and trying to find some balance is about as engaging as one could hope for, even if the ending is, perhaps, not quite as satisfying as it could have been. Andrea G. Bermejo Cinemanía (Spain) Despite its imprecise end, [director] Nely Reguera is armed with narrative simplicity, Galician humor and naturalness in her debut film.
