What to Know

Critics Consensus

Mark Felt may dramatize the man behind Deep Throat, but its stodgy treatment of history offers little insight into the famous whistleblower.

Linda Marric CineVue Despite suffering greatly from being far too expositional, still manages to somehow get under your skin and is likely to stay with you long after the credits have rolled. Rated: 3/5 Mar 30, 2018 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian The complexity of Felt's motives are left untouched in the interests of having a fiercely principled hero at the film's centre. Rated: 2/5 Mar 23, 2018 Full Review Ed Potton Times (UK) Unfortunately, the movie around him is as flat and formulaic as a Washington pen-pusher. Rated: 2/5 Mar 23, 2018 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Should be an engaging picture of the backrooms of power and the machinations that brought down a government but instead it is a talky affair that relies on exposition rather than thrills. Rated: 2/5 Mar 1, 2021 Full Review David Bax Battleship Pretension ...as for Felt, he mostly just seems to get wearier as the ordeal drags on. Unfortunately, so does the movie. Dec 11, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com This is Neeson's hour in virtually every humor-less frame, which lends the material the requisite ambience it needs. At the same time, Felt himself now seems like a footnote of the era, which relegates the film to a certain peripheral undertaking. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 26, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Rick M Riveting, intense, and extremely revealing about the corruption of the Nixon administration. Liam's Neeson portrayed the character with the greatest seriousness that it deserved. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/17/24 Full Review Jules S This was much better than Oppenheimer which was a huge disappointment. Mark Felt was well cast and acted with a good pace and understated effective screen play. It is highly watchable and easy to follow. Ignore the low score on Rotten Tomatoes I can only assume that the audience is politically biased or ruined by spin and poor writing from a lot of trash that is sadly common in movie making these days. As someone living outside the US, I was pleased to see an accurate portrayal of this moment in history and that Mark Felt was a character with a strong sense of right and wrong. I appreciated discovering him through this well document movie. Well done to the producers and Liam Neeson who was bought a distinguished presence to the role and was flawlessly focused at portraying the character at hand. Not as good as Schindler's list but nearly considering any additions would have ruined the understated clear message of the biographic details and you can't really compare the two movies. Both my husband and I found it excellent. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/27/24 Full Review Georgan G I am surprised how good this film is. Having lived through this era, wasn't sure I wanted to see yet another Watergate film. But this was from the view point of Deep Throat so quite interesting. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review Dick C It's a perfect movie for me, Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House, 2017... film written and directed by Peter Landesman, and based on the 2006 autobiography of FBI agent Mark Felt, written with John O'Connor...My acclaimed actor, Liam Neeson...with strong castings of Diane Lane, Tony Goldwyn, and Josh Lucas... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/23 Full Review Bruce R The first act and part of the second were intriguing. We got a good glimpse into Mark Felt's character and his loyalty to the FBI and country. Unfortunately, the movie falls flat in the 2nd half of the movie. It didn't really delve enough into the 'deep throat' story. We never really see the build up to that and it seems to only scratch the surface. Then there was a whole subplot with the daughter that was completely unnecessary. And then we find out before the end credits that he was convicted of corruption which was completely opposite to what we were shown for most of the film. So I was left confused as to what to think about this character. Overall the acting was superb from an all-star cast. But the direction and story-telling was inconsistent. This could've been a great companion piece to "All the President's Men." Acting was on point. Direction was a miss. Missed opportunity, Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/02/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed this one as it transports you back in time to the Nixon administration and the allegations surrounding the Watergate scandal between the FBI & the presidency team.
