Democratic Kampuchea (Cambodia) -- 1978. Three French journalists are invited by the Khmer Rouge to conduct an exclusive interview of the regime's leader, Pol Pot. The country seems ideal. But behind the Potemkin village, the Khmer Rouge regime is declining and the war with Vietnam threatens to invade the country. The regime is looking for culprits, secretly carrying out a large scale genocide. Under the eyes of the journalists, the beautiful picture cracks, revealing the horror. Their journey progressively turns into a nightmare. Freely inspired by journalist Elizabeth Becker's account in When the war was over.

Siddhant Adlakha Variety A chilling historical drama rendered with impeccable sleight of hand, Rithy Panh’s “Rendez-vous avec Pol Pot” (“Meeting With Pol Pot“) reveals its political dimensions through layers of obfuscation. Jun 1, 2024 Full Review Frank J. Avella The Contending The first 30 minutes of Rithy Panh’s otherwise compelling film, Meeting With Pol Pot, is rather dull but it builds in intensity, with the keen use of actual footage shot in 1978. Rated: C+ Dec 19, 2024 Full Review Javier Ocaña El Pais (Spain) This political thriller acquires a mysterious, disturbing, and almost dreamlike tone that nonetheless remains palpable. [Spanish] Dec 13, 2024 Full Review Martin Kudlac ScreenAnarchy A period drama infused with strong thriller undertones. Beyond depicting the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge ... the film conveys a timely message about the crucial role of journalism. Jul 18, 2024 Full Review Jaime Pena Caimán Cuadernos de Cine A full-fledged fiction, which is not exceptional in the case of Panh. Jithin K A well-made film based on a true story. But when the film doesn't really offer a whole lot new in terms of presenting such a type of story about white people in a foreign dictatorship, the skewed perspective that is very Western-centric without giving the full picture leaves me with a mixed feeling. My lack of knowledge of Cambodian history might have affected my enjoyment or lack of it in this case. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
