A young Russian Jewish immigrant in Brighton Beach, caught up in the tight constraints of his community, develops a close friendship with his grandfather's new neighbors, two elderly closeted gay men who open his imagination to the possibilities of love and the realities of loss -- and explores the East Village where he finds a world teeming with the energy of youth, desire and risk. Set in the late 1980s, as AIDS hammered New York City, Minyan is a powerful story of rebellion and self-discovery, sexual and spiritual awakening -- and survival.

What's most interesting about Eric Steel's tender coming-of-age drama is the queerness hiding in plain sight. Go to Full Review

The ensemble cast, especially Levine, Hurt, Rifkin, Bloom, and McCann, does a convincing job of establishing place, time, and mood. Go to Full Review

This is a film which will speak volubly to viewers with intersectional identities of various kinds, but it's so beautifully made, so sensitively delivered, that anybody who loves cinema would be unwise to miss it. Go to Full Review

Johann D. M @Johann33 Jun 28 🏳️‍🌈✡️ The subject matter alone makes this film worth watching. It is both fascinating and heartbreaking to witness the repression faced by gay people within traditional Jewish and Russian communities. Samuel H. Levine delivers a powerful and sensitive performance, making it impossible not to empathize with his character as he gradually discovers the possibilities of love while confronting the realities of loss. The film also captures the atmosphere of 1980s New York with authenticity, adding another layer to its emotional journey. Unfortunately, the story never reaches its full potential. The pacing is slower than necessary, and the ending feels somewhat underwhelming, leaving the impression that this compelling premise deserved a more impactful conclusion, despite featuring several genuinely moving scenes. See more Stephen M. @RT56179067 Mar 10 Samuel Levine's expressions carried the movie for me. Quietly riveting.
