A young Russian Jewish immigrant in Brighton Beach, caught up in the tight constraints of his community, develops a close friendship with his grandfather's new neighbors, two elderly closeted gay men who open his imagination to the possibilities of love and the realities of loss -- and explores the East Village where he finds a world teeming with the energy of youth, desire and risk. Set in the late 1980s, as AIDS hammered New York City, Minyan is a powerful story of rebellion and self-discovery, sexual and spiritual awakening -- and survival.

Simran Hans Observer (UK) What's most interesting about Eric Steel's tender coming-of-age drama is the queerness hiding in plain sight. Rated: 4/5 Jan 10, 2022 Full Review Linda Marric The Jewish Chronicle Eric Steel has delivered a wholly believable and handsomely executed tale of acceptance which is further elevated by his peerless attention to detail and undiluted documentarian style. Rated: 4/5 Jan 7, 2022 Full Review Rafaela Sales Ross Little White Lies An easily forgettable, painful waste of potential. Rated: 2/5 Jan 7, 2022 Full Review Ally Ham Video Librarian Magazine Although overwhelmed by multiple themes and storylines, Minyan deftly depicts the convergence of two communities–Jewish and queer–and the bittersweet experience of living between them. Rated: 4/5 Jul 19, 2024 Full Review Gregg Shapiro Bay Area Reporter The ensemble cast, especially Levine, Hurt, Rifkin, Bloom, and McCann, does a convincing job of establishing place, time, and mood. Rated: A- Feb 2, 2022 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film This is a film which will speak volubly to viewers with intersectional identities of various kinds, but it's so beautifully made, so sensitively delivered, that anybody who loves cinema would be unwise to miss it. patrick b In every scene I thought 'What is going on? I feel like I am missing the point'. You have to figure out yourself what is all about. Also problematic: the main character is supposed to be a 17-year old, but the actor is an actor of 26, who looks 26. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Joseph C Overall didn't get any emotional rewards after viewing this film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/30/22 Full Review Audience Member David is trying to find his way as a young Jewish man in NYC - and bumps up against both the traditional and the unaccepted. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member This is how films should be made - brutally honest to a characters experience. Like Bergman's Scenes From A Marriage. This film doesn't manipulate the audience into a point of view, it allows you to step in if you want to, and you will want to. The performances are all standouts. Brooke Bloom and Chris McCann are other level. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
