Audience Member The film Miracle on Ice does a terrific job of capturing emotion, yet it also has the power to share the emotions of the characters with the audience. While watching the movie, the audience watches Herb Brooks, the coach, battle his personal struggles while fully committing himself to coaching the United States Olympic hockey team. He works tirelessly to inspire his team and tests them mentally and physically to train this team and make them the best that they can possibly be. His speeches don't only inspire his team, but now inspire many people to work harder. After closely showing the brutal late-night practices and intense emotions, the movie ends with a beautiful victory against the undefeated Soviets and then finally with the United States winning the Olympics for Ice hockey. Director Steven Hilliard Stern was brilliant with the emphasis that he placed on the rising action rather than the climax. Stern showed essential rising action events that contributed to the victorious outcome for the United States. For example, he shows Herb's strategizing behind the scenes that led to family struggles. He then shows the tests that Herb faces the players with, ones that build not only work ethic but also character. Herb does many unique things that others considered completely irrational; however, he had a mental plan that he would follow through with precisely. Since majority of the movie gravitates toward the challenges rather than the success, it thoroughly gets the point across that nothing worth having comes easy. Most of all, Stern was able to create a film that would attract any audience, not just hockey players. This is a movie that inspires people and gives people hope rather than just sharing a story about winning a hockey game. This is brilliant and is likely what permitted the movie so much success. It's a story about a dream coming true and about getting what you work for, which attracts a broader group of people to connect with the plot. Also, this is a story about a great accomplishment for America. It allows American citizens to take pride in being the underdog and fighting to get what we want. It connects to the American dream and shows how far you can go when you work for it. This film brings a historical event to life while still inspiring people today.
