Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer Exceptionally fine performances elevate what could have been a pile-it-on melodrama into something deeper and more unsettling. Rated: 3/4 Apr 2, 2009 Full Review Fr. Shock Therapy R The movie should have been called Everybody Damned, b.c the message is ubiquitous. The drama was well-played, but almost a franchised series piece. While descriptive, it offered no forward messaging other than: maybe, despite everyone else's tragedy, you might have a chance at success. The characters were all killing each other softly and hardly, opting for hell-on-earth at every turn, as if speaking outside those lanes was a cultural badge. But this is an-every culture phenomenon that is unsavory to watch, b.c most are already living it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/22 Full Review adam b I'm sure all of the reviews have said it already, but this film is a littered, torn up, depression-induced, coming of age story. Definitely not your typical coming of age film as this film deals with death, deceit, abuse, and other forms of negativity that transforms all of the characters, for better or for worse. Tessa Thompson embodies that character and really is the only prosperous character in the end. Check it out if film realism is your thing Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A captivating and gritty look at everyday lives. This film captures seemingly simple moments, but at the same time, tackles big issues, like abuse, sexuality, and family dynamics. I enjoyed it very much, and identified with it at many points throughout. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review c v Mississippi Damned is a real horror story. I could not help but feel contempt and sorrow for the characters in this film, usually at the same time. Their worship of the U.S.D. ultimately is what bought each of them their own damnation. I always wonder why U.S. film's tend to depict the Bible Belt so rough, especially when these are the most patriotic areas in the country. The Mississippi economy definitely suffers from films like this that show their natives as ignorant fools bent on incest , gambling , and other such mental illnesses. The farthest in the South I may have traveled was Texas, but through the morbidly depressing lens of this film I feel like I've already spent way too much time down in the hell that is Mississppi. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This had so many upsetting parts. It was just scene after scene of crises, abuse, poverty, and decline. It was hard to watch at times, but to me, it shows how poverty and crime and abuse are often linked. It also illustrated how abuse can be an ongoing cycle with detrimental effects to those involved. Worth watching. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Emotionally charged. Tense. She truly gets to the heart of chaos in a family plagued by a generational curse. Raw and unforgiving but beautifully cut. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
