The cinematic frame might have contracted, but there's a kind of ferocious compassion in Dolan's vision, and its embrace is startlingly wide. Go to Full Review

Dorval and Clément are both exceptional, their brilliantly controlled performances contrasting with the explosive energy of rising star Pilon, who looks set to burst out of the screen and into the auditorium. Go to Full Review

Mommy ratifies Dolan's immense talent, his ability to intensely direct actors and his tireless creativity, but also his capriciousness and superfluous aesthetic, which often make him lose focus of what is essential. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Lauren K Aug 31 Didn't finish. Acting is poorly overdone. Characters aren't believable. Wouldn't watch if I was paid $1k. See more Nicole S. @nxc4le Jul 30 the french knew what they were doing with this masterpiece See more Vixo S Jul 16 I'm absolutely amazed. It's a movie that stands out for its incredible story and its complex yet realistic characters. The performances are one of its strongest aspects, as everything feels incredibly natural. It's so easy to empathize with the characters because the acting is so authentic, it truly feels like they are living these experencies. It's simply stunning. The direction is another remarkable highlight. The decision to use the 1:1 aspect ratio as a narrative choice is brilliant, and one of the most impactful moments in the film happens when this format changes. This isn't just a clever technical choice--it's a way for the director to capture truly special moments that evoke deep emotions, whether positive or negative. I also have to mention the music. The song choices are spectacular, especially the one during the end credits, which delivers a clear powerful message. In conclusion, Mommy is an absolutely must-watch film. It's been a long time since a story has surprised me this much, and I regret not having seen it sooner. See more Ardi J Mar 6 A film I watched in 2020 on a rainy midnight. I was completely immersed in it… and I cried. An epic film by Xavier Dolan, created when he was just 23 years old. This is an extraordinary masterpiece. If anyone asks me, 'What is the best film?'—this is my answer! I say it with pride. See more Jeff S 01/07/2024 This might be the best Canadian movie of the decade. See more Alec B @AlecMichaelB 11/11/2023 In Xavier Dolan's "Mommy," the audacious Canadian director unleashes a cinematic tour de force that transcends conventional storytelling. Filmed with an electrifying intensity, Dolan's use of a 1:1 aspect ratio, a square frame that heightens the emotional immediacy of each scene, is nothing short of revolutionary. The film explores the intimate relationship between a widowed mother (Anne Dorval) and her volatile son (Antoine-Olivier Pilon). Dolan's direction, coupled with the unfiltered "joual" Québécois dialect, immerses the audience into the lesser-known world of Quebec's working-class neighborhoods. The film's emotional depth is staggering, propelled by powerful performances and a pulsating soundtrack that underscores the tumultuous journey of its characters. "Mommy" is an unapologetically visceral exploration of familial bonds, beautifully captured through Dolan's distinctive visual and narrative stylings, making it a poignant and unforgettable cinematic experience.
