Critics Consensus

Despite an effective otherwordly atmosphere and appropriately cheesy visuals, Mortal Kombat suffers from its poorly constructed plot, laughable dialogue, and subpar acting.

Rob Salem Toronto Star Let's just say that Mortal Kombat is "way cool" (something I am rarely inclined to do) and leave it at that. Rated: 4/5 Aug 20, 2025 Full Review Betsy Sherman Boston Globe The result has a pleasing, unpretentious B-movie verve, putting a new sheen on the old-time Saturday-matinee serial. Aug 20, 2025 Full Review Manohla Dargis L.A. Weekly Mortal Kombat isn't the worst movie of the year, but it's easily the most forgettable. Aug 20, 2025 Full Review Stephen Hunter Baltimore Sun Mortal Kombat is probably the best film ever derived from a video game, but that's a pretty small pea patch of which to be the prince. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 20, 2025 Full Review Dennis King Tulsa World For folks who expect their movies to actually contain sympathetic characters and telling engaging stories, this movie's like plugging quarters into a washing machine. Rated: 2/4 Aug 20, 2025 Full Review Gary Wolcott Tri-City Herald Mortal Kombat reminded me of the old B-grade Sinbad movies from the late '50s and early '60s. Though the fight scenes get terminally boring by film's end, and the point of the film is kind of hokey, it's mostly a lot of fun. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 19, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Eric My theater played the wrong movie. The 2021 version was shown. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Ben W Super fun and cheesy! Great time! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/23 Full Review Incog D In my opinion, still one of the most/best FAITHFUL adaptions of Mortal Kombat. Legendary music, memorable fight scenes, memorable quotes, great cast(except the obvious Raiden poke), decent comedy, and plenty of cheesy charm. I'd go as far to say that it laid the groundwork that most other movies in the franchise failed to capture and that even the Mortal Kombat games took inspiration from it (Kano being Australian and how Shang Tsung talks). Its not for everyone but it's undeniable of how fun and memorable this movie is. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/05/25 Full Review Daniel N Hands down one of my all time favourite movies. Great story, great writing, great cast, awesome fight scenes and amazing soundtrack. Could watch this on repeat. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/30/25 Full Review Jason H I was 22 when this was released and I loved it. I watched it again a couple of years ago, and I wondered what I was taking when I was 22. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/24/25 Full Review Jace T I watched this movie with my cousin over and over again when we were children. First off, we loved the Mortal Kombat games. Seeing Subzero and Scorpion for the first time in a movie was absolutely legendary. Yet still even to this day, though this movie is not perfect, it hate been immortalized in Mortal Kombat lore. The theme song of this film is epic. Kano made a huge impression, and who could ever forgot "Your soul is mine" being said by Shang Tsung. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
