Critics Consensus

Aggressively strange and willfully unfunny, the misguided Mortdecai sounds a frightfully low note in Johnny Depp's post-Pirates filmography.

The jokes are astonishingly unfunny, splitting the cast between those desperate to please, and those looking to slip off with most of their dignity intact. Go to Full Review

This wilfully terrible film marks a significant juncture in Johnny Depp's peculiar career. It is, to him, as the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was to the Balkan League. Go to Full Review

I feel as though “Mortdecai” revolves around a continuous inside joke that I was never let in on. Surely a comedy can’t be this anemic, lame, and humorless. Go to Full Review

Capers flicks of a bygone era had a swingin', hip feel of controlled chaos not overplayed farce but Depp is pedal-to-the-metal, quirking-it-up in a display completely without charm and worse, without wit. Go to Full Review

The humor is intelligent, high brow humor; as you just have to just understand it's over the top and let yourself be there with it. It's very delightful and each character has their own hilarious aspect to them. Don't listen to any of these lame critics. Actually take a ride with a movie for once. If you are an avid movie watcher and are trying to find something one of a kind. This is it. See more thiago s @Thiagostone Oct 6 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Anne S Aug 3 Whilst widely slated, we thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was. It's rare these days that we laugh at "comedy" but this one raised several laugh out loud moments, it's not a serious film, it's a farce, and for some classical slapstick it was really funny. I'm happy to swim against the tide and say we really enjoyed it. See more nick s Jun 26 Painful. I could only watch a few minutes. In terms of acting and script it was like watching an amateur theatre group perform a high school skit. Someone should have told JD it just wasn't working.
