Well-respected businessman Earl Brooks (Kevin Costner) has a secret: Beneath his family-man facade lurks a murderous alter-ego named Marshall (William Hurt). Brooks struggles with his addiction to killing, but Marshall enjoys his grisly hobby too much to let go. Finally, Brooks resolves to commit one final murder, but a voyeur (Dane Cook) witnesses it and blackmails him to continue. With a detective (Demi Moore) hot on his trail, Brooks/Marshall must spin an increasingly elaborate web.

Critics Consensus

The setup is intriguing, but Mr. Brooks overstuffs itself with twists and subplots, becoming more preposterous as it goes along.

David Ansen Newsweek The good news: there are many twists, turns, subplots and surprises that the coming attractions don't even hint at. The bad news: these twists and turns are so preposterous, or so irrelevant, that they undermine the movie they're meant to tart up. Apr 7, 2008 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard Costner gives a nicely underplayed performance and the film is well enough made to be watchable, if only to find out what enormity will be perpetrated next, and by whom. Callum O “Mr. Brooks” is a disappointing film. While it presents an interesting lead character with great potential for a unique serial killer thriller, it is ultimately failed by a bad script. The plot relies on predictable and lazy plot drivers, which feel uninspired and hinder the film’s momentum. Surprisingly slow, the movie's two-hour runtime is really felt, as the narrative meanders and struggles to build genuine tension or engage the viewer. Overall, what could have been a compelling psychological thriller ends up feeling like a sluggish, squandered opportunity. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Rolla G Brooks is ultimately even scarier because his family life - or the facade behind which he hides - is so incredibly normal. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Kyle M Despite the unfathomable twisted core per the subject, the “Natural Born Killers” joining “Fight Club” presents compelling showcases for Costner, Hurt and Moore with intellectual commitment amid the storyline’s intriguing outlook with persuasive potential that wasn’t pursued alongside few missed opportunities. Shortly put, it may be sickening at its center but it’s bearably entertaining. (B) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Alf N Feels like it was written for Nicolas Cage but we got stuck with dry as dirt Kevin Costner. He is the failure, not the plot. Hate Mr Smith as well. Lame. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
