      Critics Consensus

The setup is intriguing, but Mr. Brooks overstuffs itself with twists and subplots, becoming more preposterous as it goes along.

Audience Member The guy from waterworld kills it in this movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Jeffrey P All the critics are Moron's. This movie is top 5 all time for me, and I don't like scary movies but I loved the back and forth of the Main character. Yes there are twists and turns, but for a genius level character like Mr. Brooks. It would be doable. If you like forensic files, or Law and Order, or if serial Killer psyche is interesting, watch a crazy person struggle trying to be good. It is awesome. I would watch if they made a followup 20 years later when demi moores character finally catches him. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review matthias s "Mr. Brooks" is a film that leaves you scratching your head, not in confusion, but in disappointment. Despite a stellar cast featuring Kevin Costner and Demi Moore, the movie fails to deliver on its promising premise. The plot is as thin as a paperclip and stretched out over a runtime that feels longer than a cross-country road trip. The characters are utterly unbelievable; Mr. Brooks, a respected businessman who moonlights as a serial killer, is about as realistic as a unicorn in a police lineup. While the cast is undoubtedly talented, their performances are lackluster at best, making it difficult to invest in the story. This film had the potential to be a gripping psychological thriller, but instead, it squanders the opportunity. In the end, "Mr. Brooks" is a missed opportunity that will leave you wondering why such a fantastic cast would sign up for such a lackluster film. If you're looking for a thrilling experience, you'd be better off skipping this one. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Catalin L It's a delight to see the unique Costner/Hurt duo on screen. This holds up to this day, being able to ignore some subplots that are a bit mundane. It's a classic of the serial killer genre with an original style. Ever since William Hurt passed, it became an even more rare cinema gem. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/17/23 Full Review Matthew B This movie was crafted interestingly and I kind of liked the way the killer weaved the path to the finale. But it was like watching a series that had been told it was cancelled and instead had to be made into a movie. There was not enough time to develop the elaborate set-up and to develop any depth to the characters. I think if this had been a 4 part series it would have been excellent. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/23 Full Review Mark W Costner's bad acting is eclipsed by the non-acting of Dane Cook. How did Hurt agree to appear in this unbelievable travesty? Mr Brookes is the worst thing I have seen in memory. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

The bad news: these twists and turns are so preposterous, or so irrelevant, that they undermine the movie they're meant to tart up. Apr 7, 2008 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Brooks is ultimately even scarier because his family life - or the facade behind which he hides - is so incredibly normal. Rated: 8/10 Nov 27, 2020 Full Review Micheal Compton Bowling Green Daily News While Costner does his part, ultimately "Brooks" fails -- with a convoluted plot that seems more preposterous the more you think about it. Nov 21, 2019 Full Review Megan Basham WORLD However hellish Brooks' acts might be, we admire how coolly he executes them. So rather than wish jail or worse on Mr. Brooks, the audience joins him in reveling in how neatly he disposes of his victims. Hollywood is, after all, so good at what it does.
