Critics Consensus

Mr. Holmes focuses on the man behind the mysteries, and while it may lack Baker Street thrills, it more than compensates with tenderly wrought, well-acted drama.

Only the wonderful work of Ian McKellen manages to give authenticity to a film that falls far short of achieving its objective. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Logan D Sep 11 Long retired Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen) attempts to recall his last case while fighting memory loss. An intimate, character-driven work from Condon whom, with the exception of the Twilight films (likely not his fault), has directed three films I've enjoyed immensely. A nuanced performance from McKellen elevates this reflective story even more. There's not much mystery. Just meditation on life, death, and the man hidden in the stories. See more James M. @BenjiMiller Jul 28 A beautiful display of the art of cinematography, very well staged and presented visually stunning. While not an action packed Holmes we have known Ian McKellen delivers a masterpiece performance depicting the senior years of the great detective. The supporting performances of Laura Linney and young Milo Parker are excellent and compellingly complete the reality of a great man’s approaching his demise! See more Dominique R 05/21/2024 Perfect movie. I cried in the last 20min. If this is hated by someone then that person does not enjoy classy classical storytelling. Ian is so amazing as Sherlock, he portrays a lonely man that struggles with relationships while being the best at his career. As Sherlock begins to form a grandfather bond child his regrets and few mistakes in life seem to become more redeemable as he comes into his last stages of life. If you are okay with waiting 10mins before the story becomes really interesting you’ll find it was worth the wait. I can’t rave enough about this movie. Clean enough to watch with children is always a plus. I Loved it! See more Andrea K 05/11/2024 A sweet story concerning regret and the attempt to make something right before it is too late in life. It's never too late to learn and apply the lessons life has handed us over the years. See more 04/23/2024 Best story I’ve seen in a very long time. Ian McKellen & Laura Linney were so beautiful in it. Great acting all around. Thank you- See more Bruno V 03/19/2024 O background ficou raso, merecia mais um orçamento e uma investida na história. Estamos falando de "holmes" o impecável "holmes", não um personagem qualquer. See more Read all reviews
