Noel Murray The Dissolve The violence isn't unmotivated, or generic. Fleischer and Leonard establish the setting and premise well enough that it's damn near tragic when Renda shoots up Majestyk's watermelon crop. Rated: 3/5 Aug 11, 2014 Full Review Michael Sragow New Yorker Majestyk is a multidimensional hero. He's socially conscious yet individualistic, half-smart and semi-tough, human enough to make mistakes and man enough to correct them. Sep 3, 2012 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ... is anything but your rote Bronson by-the-numbers revenge story... Rated: 4/5 Jan 29, 2024 Full Review Sean Burns Crooked Marquee What a relief it is to watch a Bronson film in which nobody gets raped. Jun 3, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Leonard's brusque dialogue, Bronson's stabilizing presence, and Fleischer's able handling of action set-pieces combine to make this a breezy watch. Rated: 3/4 Dec 11, 2021 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal The schemes and scrapes Bronson initiates are of the highest order for mid-1970s muscle. But amid the gunfights and car chases, this is a Bronson movie that's as much about strategic flourish as explosive fireworks. It's a simple story, solidly told. Jay W Yippe Ki Yay Melon Farmer: For coming out about 50 years ago, the film feels surprisingly modern. This same script and set up could easily be a modern Liam Neeson or Gerard Bulter film with just a few tweaks. Charles Bronson plays the titular "Mr. Majestyk", who just wants to farm his melons. He is a great reluctant hero. It feels like there is an action movie going on, and Bronson just keeps wanting to ignore it and go back to his melon farm. The good guys are really good, and the bad guys are really bad. It is a simple cathartic feeling to watch this good vs. Evil story. The hero and villain are given quite a few scenes to interact with each other making their rivalry feel more personal. The action is surprisingly well done for the time. There are some innovative car chases and cool shootouts. The movie may have blown their budget on early car chase, which makes the ending feel less climatic. It still a good end, just not as explosive as the middle. It may not be anything groundbreaking, but it is pretty majestic. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Steve D I found Bronson a bit too wooden. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/08/23 Full Review Matthew L Just let the man pick his melons. Classic Bronson....... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/02/22 Full Review Audience Member Charles Bronson is one cool MF in this movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/24/22 Full Review Liam D It's just Charles Bronson (Bloodhounds of Broadway, You're in the Navy Now) kicking ass and more adult movie from Richard Fleischer (Doctor Dolittle, Barabbas) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Directed by Richard Fleischer (Compulsion, Fantastic Voyage, Soylent Green, Mandingo, The Jazz Singer) and written by Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty, Out of Sight), this film finds our pally Charles Bronson playing Vincent Majestyk, an ex-con, former U.S. Army Ranger instructor and current watermelon farmer who just wants to get his crop in on time. Bobby Kopas (Paul Koslo, Vanishing Point) tries to get Majestyk to pay protection money and ends up on the end of his own shotgun. He turns the table on our hero by bringing assault charges against him and Majestyk goes to jail before he can harvest his crops, potentially ruining his finances. So he does what you or I would: when gangster Frank Renda's (Al Lettieri, The Godfather) men try to busy him loose, he kidnaps the crook himself and holds him for hostage. All he wants is to pick his melons. The rest of the film finds the two men continually going at one another. Well, to be fair, Majestyk is only concerned with melons, whether in the field or owned by his love interest Nancy Chavez (Linda Cristal, who was on the TV show The High Chaparral and in the TV movie The Dead Don't Die). Every time Renda, Kopas or any of their underlings try to take him down, he just laughs and gets over on them. Hey — it's Bronson, you know? I also love Lee Purcell in this movie, playing the gangster's moll who carries a Bible everywhere she goes. You have to love the tagline for this film: "Last year Billy Jack became one of the most popular pictures of our time. Walking Tall thrilled audiences across the nation. Now the movie everyone's talking about is Mr. Majestyk." They also tried: "Why are they saying it's the one movie you should see this year? Ask anyone who's seen it. Anyone." This came out the same month as Death Wish and to show what a star Bronson was, when The Man with the Golden Gun underperformed, Mr. Majestyk played as a supporting feature underneath that Bond picture. I mean, there's even a Turkish remake of this movie, Karpuzcu, which shows you just how big Bronson's appeal was worldwide. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
