Critics Consensus

Munich can't quite achieve its lofty goals, but this thrilling, politically even-handed look at the fallout from an intractable political conflict is still well worth watching.

Zadie Smith Daily Telegraph (UK) Eric Bana gives a performance that deserves something more serious than an Oscar. It's a sublimely convincing portrayal of a man who is travelling far from who he is in order to defend who he is. Feb 12, 2020 Full Review Victoria Segal New Statesman Munich's passion is clear, its intention good, the skill behind it immense; there is something brave about its decision to take politics into the multiplex. Sep 26, 2017 Full Review Noel Murray The Dissolve Munich is more measured and classy than Spielberg's action-adventures. Rated: 4/5 Feb 23, 2015 Full Review Joe Lipsett Murder Made Fiction Podcast - Bloody Disgusting Munich has a great cast and behind the scenes pedigree, but it feels like two films in one. One is an exciting action/heist film about a team of assassins. The other is an introspective film about retribution, family and land. The two don't fully mesh. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 30, 2025 Full Review Dan Bayer Next Best Picture The film’s indulgent length and deliberate pacing – combined with a remote, uncharismatic lead – can make it a slog to get through despite some thrilling set pieces that remain some of the best-directed sequences in Spielberg’s career. Rated: 7/10 Nov 28, 2024 Full Review Stella Papamichael Radio Times Violence begets violence in Steven Spielberg's bold and brooding thriller, beginning with the tragedy of the 1972 Munich Olympics. Jon G A great movie on what happened in Munich during the 1973 Olympics, great movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review Kyle M A vice versa complimentary between Steven Spielberg’s “Munich”, released 20 years ago, and Tim Fehlbaum’s “September 5”, released last year. The former is visually powerful over the harrowing dramatization intersecting the moral examination that follows in relevant, uncertain senses that blurs violently amidst the utterly sharp craft. As for the latter, the thrilling docudrama definitively weighs the circumstance in a tightening, sorrowful grip, thus surpassing what its narrative predecessor evoked despite the aspectual dramatic elaboration signifying its own admirable traits. (B) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/25 Full Review Stephen C 2 hours and 44 minutes based on a true story. Rated R for Nudity, Language, Some Sexual Content and Strong Graphic Violence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/02/25 Full Review Benjamin H Having a masterful attention to detail combined with Spielberg's brilliant direction, Munich does have a few problems with its pacing, especially during its start and ending, but it is a great retelling of the Munich massacre and the Mossad Operation that is structured really well, is emotionally complex and has several thrilling sequences. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review Geo3 F Munich is a good hitman film, great dialogue and once again Spielberg adding the artwork cinematography. I liked how this film touch the subject of killing someone most film ignore that emotion. Other than that is a good movie to watch about a subject that to this day still resonates. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Paul S This is one of the most intense movies I have ever seen. The story was compelling and brutal, and it has some of the most suspenseful scenes I've ever seen in a movie. I definitely recommend it for history and suspense fans!
