      Muppet Treasure Island

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Though less Muppet-centric than the original trilogy, Muppet Treasure Island is an energetic, cheerful take on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure, with typically solid gags.

azura r My favorite movie! Witty, heart warming, good music, the actors are great and, as always, so are the Muppets (Gonzo and Rizzo take center stage). Wish I could give it more stars. I would love for the Muppets to make a couple more classic books into movies Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review David W It's got the Muppets and the wonderful Tim Curry as Long John Silver, if that doesn't sell it to you then you have no soul. Up there with Christmas Carol as the best of the Muppets in movie form. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/03/23 Full Review Raven M Funny and delightful entertaining classic . Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/30/23 Full Review Jacob B Possibly the most underrated film in the Muppets' filmography, Muppet Treasure Island is a fun take on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale. It boasts memorable puppet designs for the original Muppets created for this movie, the comedic timing is great, the songs are fun, Hans Zimmer composes a great score and, of course, Tim Curry as Long John Silver is the MVP. Everyone hypes up Michael Caine's Scrooge as the best thing since sliced bread but not enough people give Curry credit for how much fun the man seems to be having in the role. And sure enough, he considers this to be his favourite role he's played. Jim Hawkins is likeable enough but, Curry aside, I don't think anybody's watching a Treasure Island film starring the Muppets for the likes of him. Maybe I'm just a weirdo like Gonzo that way, being the heretic who preferred The Great Muppet Caper over The Muppet Movie and this film over The Muppet Christmas Carol but remember, reviews are NOT the gospel. Form your own opinions. And I just thought Muppet Treasure Island was more fun. Maybe it's because of how underrated it is having come out when the franchise's popularity was gradually declining. I have found myself preferring one entry over another in a franchise in the past because of its lower profile and thus not as overexposed and memed to death as the more popular film so maybe it's just because no one gave me a reason to expect to be blown away like with Muppet Christmas Carol. These aren't really sequels anyway so are the comparisons all that fair? Only Muppets Most Wanted was an actual sequel. Though admittedly MTI does take similar cues from MCC including being directed by the son of the late Jim Henson so maybe the comparisons aren't as unwarranted, I think? Still, I had a really good time watching Muppet Treasure Island and would be tempted to recommend it if it didn't mean I'd have to deal with the awkward question from the people I know of why I'm watching a Muppet movie at my age who know I'm unable to pull out the "younger relatives" card and "I lost a bet" wouldn't hold up in court. Yes, The Muppets IP was never really for little children but I do have enough experience to know that bringing them up to certain people is more trouble than its worth. Oh well. P.S. No, I'm not reviewing Muppets From Space. It's poor reputation among Muppet fans and premise that alienated people who identified with Gonzo suggests that it's not worth my time. And anyway, due to rights issues with Sony, it's not on Disney+, not that that stopped me with The Muppets Take Manhattan but MFS and its unflattering abbreviation is a different beast given how it didn't involve the Hensons or Frank Oz. Long story short, I don't want to watch the Muppets dealing with sci-fi shenanigans. It will be spared from my reviewing wrath. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/03/23 Full Review Mikey B To quote an insane Irishman "laugh!" Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/01/23 Full Review Josh G The Muppets bring a fun story telling device, excellent puppetry, fun songs, and great humor to a classic tale. It leaves a giant smile on face what a fun time. Gonzo and Rizzo lead a musical adventure that is so much fun. The songs are catchy and memorable it's a blast.
