Early 1900's on a Greek island. Hadoula, who lost her husband at a young age, is a woman who has learned to survive in a male -- dominated and extremely patriarchal society, the hard way. Hadoula carries a difficult burden within her. Like a baton passed on to her from her mother and the previous generations, she is supposed to accept the devaluation and lower fate of women. But Hadoula reacts. Her personal, internal, bubbling revolution is soon externalized. The victims of her outburst are the little girls of the island, whom she sets free from the social and economic burden that their existence entails... by taking their lives. Her actions will bring her face to face with the law. She leaves her home and escapes to her refuge, nature. But as much as her faith and morals dictate that she did the right thing, her transgenerational trauma follows her everywhere. And the end comes as a redemption.

Though director Eva Nathena and screenwriter Katerina Bei attempt to trace out their protagonist’s state of mind, it is frequently lost in a muddled approach to blending cold reality with feverish flashbacks and fantasy. Go to Full Review

Murderess is a scathing peek into an evil, religion-infested patriarchal world that still exists in some countries...the movie is not an easy sit with its depiction of grief, misery, heartache, infanticide, gendercide. Not exactly a barrel of laughs. Go to Full Review

It's a harsh tale whose arresting aesthetic in director Eva Nathena's hands owes much to the grey-to-black palette of the rocky landscape, in which it seems impossible anything might grow—least of all human kindness. Go to Full Review

Vince Q. @Vincedeq Oct 30 Based on the greek novel of the same name, this bleak recounting showcases the realities of raising daughters in a pre-industrial Greece. If the family of a woman of marrying age lacked the money to post a dowry, their daughter had little chance of enjoying matrimony. A technically solid greek cinematic offering, this film is worth the watch if you can find it. See more Dionisis T 11/15/2024 One of the most beautiful Greek movies of the decade!
