Critics Consensus

A coming-of-age story with a uniquely sunny noir spin, Murina deftly explores dark themes against a deceptively idyllic setting.

Scott Tobias The Reveal (Substack) Murina has an erotic charge similar to The Postman Always Rings Twice, the classic noir about a torrid affair between a charismatic outsider and the younger wife of a domineering man. Rated: 4/5 Oct 3, 2022 Full Review Ty Burr Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack) Filipović is a real discovery: A rebel in a dazzling white swimsuit that’s like a middle finger raised to the patriarchy. Rated: 3/4 Sep 23, 2022 Full Review David Sims The Atlantic Murina has a terrific keep-you-guessing plot, and Filipović’s performance firmly establishes her as a talent to watch. Aug 3, 2022 Full Review William Stottor Loud and Clear Reviews Psychological drama Murina masterfully unfolds like a nightmare, as it follows an abusive father and the control he exhibits over his wife and daughter. Rated: 4/5 Jul 18, 2024 Full Review Farah Cheded A Good Movie To Watch A film of natural beauty and human ugliness, a slow burn of a psychological drama that uses volatile teenage emotions as its incendiary fuel. Dec 2, 2023 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan It makes subtle and impactful statements of female allegories, misogyny, and toxic manhood — a dramatic movie shot on a paradise island, with escalating tension and beautiful visuals. Alec B I appreciate that its coming of age narrative is more fraught than anything else. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Mark K Slow paced with minimal dialog and plot that enhances the scenery and sounds of this little coastal dystopia. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/19/23 Full Review dave d Murina is a Croatian take on the oft-told coming-of-age drama that is too familiar. It is a bit of a love quadrant, perhaps a love rhombus. Other than a lot of eye candy via the cinematography, there isn't a lot of story or characters that are developed. Why do I care about these characters? In the end, there is not nearly enough depth to give this a recommendation. Final Score: 5/10 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/10/23 Full Review Tom K A simple story but wonderfully an powerfully told through the performances of the leads. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Overall, this is an outstanding drama film.  It's filled with real and highly believable performances that are both heartbreaking and dramatic, and the outcomes of each character in this story are highly unpredictable and satisfying.  Visually, this film can't be faulted, and it captures tense moments, stunning landscapes and sceneries wonderfully.  It's a film that didn't take me long to get invested in, and the outcomes are rewarding and impressive.  As a directional debut from Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic, I'm proud to highly praise this film as it leaves a powerful impact on those who experience it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review greg r Tons of potential. Well filmed. Well scored. Well acted. But the story just never leaves you satisfied. It ends just as it began. And ultimately, you have learned nothing from the experience. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
