Critics Consensus

My Dinner with Hervé offers a standard narrative on celebrity and infamy, but formidable performances by Peter Dinklage and Jamie Dornan find the dimensionality and pathos of Hervé Villechaize the man.

Lucy Mangan Guardian Villechaize as written is a glorious part - poignant as he wrestles with the limitations placed on him by others and infuriating as he spurns the help of those trying to save him from himself - even if it was far less fun in real life. Rated: 4/5 Oct 29, 2018 Full Review Deborah Ross The Mail on Sunday (UK) Dinklage is superb, not just peeling back Villechaize layer by layer, but conveying simultaneously a man who was manipulative and aggressive...but also lonely and vulnerable and plain sad. Rated: 4/5 Oct 29, 2018 Full Review Troy Patterson New Yorker My Dinner with Hervé cannot make a straight-faced claim that Villechaize was an important actor or significant cultural figure, so its own significance depends on the star's charisma, which lends the proceedings a simple poignance. Oct 23, 2018 Full Review Asia Frey Lagniappe (Mobile, AL) To see Dinklage bring such humanity and pathos to such a complexly unhappy character was the most profound aspect of the film. Feb 28, 2019 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) This fine HBO-produced biopic of the late Herve Villechaize has been a passion project for Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage for several years. Rated: 4/5 Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com Gervasi steers clear of farcical intent, which surprises, instead trying to find the strangeness and sincerity in this meeting of broken men. Kirstin S Dornan and Dinklage give phenomenal performances in this biopic. This movie has layers of parallelism of fame, acting choices and the human condition not only in Dornan and Dinklage's lives but Hollywood/movies in general. The movie draws you in with the bond between two complete strangers who have more in common then they think. Dornan gives one of his strongest performances ever. He shows depth, humor, and emotional range that is respectable of high praise and oscar noms. Disappointing the academy didnt recognize his powerful performance. Dinklage also deserves recognition for his role capturing the main protagonist. Go watch it!! Highly recommend Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review Aggie D This was riveting. I could not stop until it ended. A marvellous take on the nebulous and impermanent nature of fame and idol worship. It was touching and poignant-and wonderfully acted by Peter Dinklage and Jamie Dornan. More so because it is an essentially true story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/03/23 Full Review John B While I enjoyed the movie and story it told about the real life of Herve Villechaize, I had a hard time with Dinklage as the main character. Herve was a one of a kind so it would be hard for another actor to portray him, but I do think Peter did a good job. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Very interesting story about Herve Villechaize. I was apprehensive about Peter Dinklage’s portrayal because the two look little alike other than their height, but Dinklage IS Herve. I forgot I was watching an actor which is the highest praise of performance. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/18/21 Full Review ajay j Never knew much about Herve, good movie providing more of his backstory. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Really good interesting movie starring Peter dinklage and the guy from fifty shades of grey. This movie is really good and I like Peter dinklages character herve. He's crazy and Peter dinklage is a perfect fit for the role. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
