Dafoe certainly dedicates himself to the material and the shadowy cinematography from Mauro Pinheiro Jr emphasises every cheek and bone hollow of its sick central character, but the project as a whole is too self-absorbed to be absorbing for anyone else.

This is another film on Dafoe's resume that shows he is one of Hollywood's most under-appreciated actors. This film may not be perfect and it is odd at times but it is very touching when it tackles themes of mortality and rediscovering life. This film is definitely worth checking out as it is a rather surreal experience that allows the viewer to see how the director confronts death. Willem Dafoe is SO great in this film -- definitely deserved an Oscar! Hector Babenco's cinematic references are wonderful, especially the Singin' in the Rain homage at the end. He's very sincere in his love for those things and his love for cinema. Must-see!
