What to Know

Critics Consensus

Storytelling isn't My Zoe's strength, but the depth of feeling that writer-director-star Julie Delpy brings to her characters helps offset this drama's flaws.

Nell Minow AWFJ.org It is a challenge to combine blistering scenes between hostile exes and thoughtful explorations of medical ethics, but writer/director/star Julie Delpy brings it all together. Nov 9, 2021 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture My Zoe is a strange, moving picture about how we process grief - or, in some cases, fail to - but it's also a powerful and complex exploration of scientific, emotional, and familial ethics. Aug 11, 2021 Full Review David Stratton The Australian The hostility between Isabelle and Richard has to be contained in these challenging circumstances, which only adds to the stress and unhappiness. Delpy handles these scenes with a delicate skill... Rated: 3/5 Jun 18, 2021 Full Review Susan Wloszczyna AWFJ.org Delpy is casually mesmerizing and naked with her feelings in a way that only a handful of actresses could ever achieve... Nov 9, 2021 Full Review Sandie Angulo Chen AWFJ.org Regardless of whether audiences agree with Isabelle's decisions, they will likely empathize with this portrait of a mother in despair. Nov 9, 2021 Full Review Jennifer Merin AWFJ.org Always at the heart of My Zoe's heartbreaking angst and that surprising genre shift is the ever powerful love of the mother - brought to life with sensitivity and subtlety by Delpy - for her daughter. Chris C A terribly boring film. I might have enjoyed it more having not read "dystopian future" which is not an accurate description. Very little happens, arguments between the parents about stuff we don't care about and then an extremely predictable ending. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/26/23 Full Review Daniel G It seemed almost like 2 movies - a slow drama focusing on a family tragedy, a fast-paced Black Mirror-like scifi that ultimately generates false hope. Though it was a well-done character study that obviously was a work of love for Julie Delpy - lead protagonist, writer and director, it was just not wholly satisfying, Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/25/22 Full Review mark d Julie Delpy wrote, directed, and stars in this subtle yet moving story of a mother's undying love for her daughter. She plays Isabelle, a brilliant researcher living in Germany. She's going through a difficult divorce while having an affair with another man. One day her daughter Zoe, who she dotes on, becomes ill and ends up in the hospital. There's no explanation for what happened to her, and she goes into a coma. Both she and her ex husband are devastated when their beloved daughter dies. While her husband thinks they need to move on, Isabelle saves a bit of Zoe's skin and is determined to have her cloned. This sounds futuristic, but the way the story is told, it could actually happen today. I got totally sucked into the story and found the acting brilliant. Although it's slow paced, there's an undercurrent of tension that kept me glued to the screen right until the end. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member After trashing the sacrifices of motherhood in Before Midnight, Delpy celebrates the institution, albeit in a twisted, modern way that declares my body and my life are my own, even though I had nothing to do with bringing it into existence. Not up to her previous work. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/04/21 Full Review Audience Member This was poorly executed and drowning in expository, dragging dialogue. We only saw it through to the end because we found the writing and Delphy's performance so ridiculously humorous. Made us in the mood to watch Tommy Wiseau's The Room! Shame!
