      Critics Consensus

Drew Barrymore's effervescent charm is almost enough to make you forgive this teen comedy's incredibly silly storyline.

Audience Member Drew Barrymore, Molly Shannon, David Arquette, Octavia Spencer, John C. Reily, Leelee Solbieski, Marley Shelton, and Jessica Alba one of the biggest teen hits of the late 90's focuses on Josie Geller, a journalist who's never been kissed in her life but she gets a huge job opportunity going undercover for a news scoop not only that but she has a chance to go back to high school and relive the experience the thing is high school was hell for Josie back in the day when she constantly ostracized and picked on being so low on the food chain but maybe she can remedy all that now it's still just as tough today dealing with the student body pressure as well as making up for the days that were the worst there's a lot to contend with from class to the various social groups to prom etc. there's more to life than high school and popularity, you'll never find out who you are if you stay the same on the social ladder, is being noticed way more important?, you don't have to make fun of others to feel better about yourselves, you can write about who you are and not necessarily about what you know only Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Emily P I loved this movie; Never been kissed is one of my favorite movies I think everybody has a Josie Geller inside of them no one will ever admit it, we're all goofy, dorky, and a little clueless at times the first time I saw this movie I loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/21/24 Full Review Holly It's so funny and romantic it's def one of the best teen movies out there :) love the ending 😭❤️ xx Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/13/23 Full Review Jacob B Raja Gosnell's best, leaning more towards "actually okay" rather than "least bad", film, precisely because it's nothing like the rest of his filmography with this film being a teen-oriented romcom rather than a live-action adaptation of a cartoon or a crappy family comedy (and yes, I include fellow PG-13 film Big Momma's House in that category. Wouldn't be the first time there was a PG-13 film that identified as family-oriented). True, Never Been Kissed is cheesy, predictable and hardly what one would call hysterically funny but Drew Barrymore delivers a very endearing performance, I liked seeing John C. Reilly in a different role than the type of characters I'm used to and the last 20 minutes are actually quite good. Probably not realistic but I do get a feeling of sincerity that just makes it charming. Despite the unconventional set-up, this high school-based romcom isn't quite as witty as 10 Things I Hate About You but Never Been Kissed is cute and shows a side of Raja Gosnell who, for once, wasn't trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. A side of him that has never been seen since. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/14/23 Full Review StephenPaul C LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 47 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Starring Drew Barrymore as a reporter who kisses his best friend at the end of the movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/23 Full Review Allen H Drew is lovable in these romantic comedies. She is fine in this but it isn't her strongest movie. I am tired of how high school movies like this need to exaggerate the stereotypes. It's like writers are too lazy or scared to look into an honest appraisal on school life. I also find the budding romance with the teacher smarmy. Maybe that is the realistic part of their interpenetration of high school. Jan 23, 2019 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast While the student/teacher romance never played sat well, Barrymore and Vartan have great chemistry (and it is *slightly* excusable as an adaptation of As You Like It). Otherwise this fish out of water film is totally rufus: sweet and charming.
