The formal proscenium staging and classical lighting are all Greenaway's, but the central fulminating performance from Freeman is the real revelation. Go to Full Review

Often, Greenaway's handling of actors is his weakest point: but he gets fiercely intelligent performances here from Martin Freeman and Eva Birthistle as the artist and his wife Saskia. Go to Full Review

There is a vertiginous sense that Freeman could, after all, have been a contender, if not in the Laughton weight class. Go to Full Review

At more than two hours, with almost no depiction of the groundbreaking painter at work and few views of the paintings themselves, there's time to spread a lot of highfalutin manure. Go to Full Review

If you're aware of Peter Greenaway's work you'll know to expect luscious visuals, plenteous sex and nudity, and a certain degree of impenetrability Go to Full Review

Emilio T @MilloTPue 05/19/2020 The main essence of the movie dwells in photography. See more 09/30/2019 6/10 confusing, pompous, gritty, true See more 03/01/2017 Martin Freeman stars as Rembrandt in Greenaway's film that posits that Rembrandt discovered that a murder had been concealed by the members of the militia company depicted in "The Night Watch" and that he embedded clues in the painting as an accusation. It's an odd film that incorporates deliberate anachronisms, mainly in the way characters speak, and references back to earlier Greenaway films, mainly "The Draughtsman's Contract" and "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover". It's also a very deliberately profane and raunchy film. If you're dying to see Freeman naked ... look no further. See more 05/20/2016 Peter Greenaway's film: beautiful, but totally unapproachable. See more 02/24/2016 I haven't forgiven Greenaway for the shit he pulled in The Baby of Macon but this reminded me of the possible beauty of his art, even if it is very conventional by his recent standards. The lighting is impossibly gorgeous, and the sadness it's frequently imbued with surprisingly affecting. It makes me want to re-watch all his classics on proper Blu-Ray transfers, including this one. See more 12/02/2012 An art movie in every sense, featuring beautiful cinematography, vibrant colors, and elaborate sets that look more like paintings than real-life locations (intentionally so). The dialogue is sharp and witty, with a dose of black humor typical to Greenaway movies. Unfortunately, the story is a bit muddled and not easy to follow. Peter Greenaway fans would love this movie, not so sure about the rest of the audience. See more Read all reviews
