Boka (Jimmy Butler), the strong, confident leader of a gang of street toughs in Germany, is the envy of all the local kids. His polar opposite is a boy named Nemecsek (George Breakston), a sickly loner who worships Boka from a distance, and who yearns to wear the colors and emblems of his army and be accepted. One day, Boka's gang is disrespected by "The Red Shirts," leading to open hostilities between them -- and a chance for Nemecsek to prove his worth to those he views as his peers.

Meyer Levin (Patterson Murphy) Esquire Magazine The photoplay is a disgusting and sentimental idealization of war, subtly dangerous because it is a picture with direct child-appeal. It is no easy matter to assemble fifty to a hundred small boys, put them through their paces, and turn out a picture that has some degree of naturalness, sincerity, and a great deal of drama. Audience Member Nobody directed sentimental like Frank Borzage, and this anti-war film is a great example of his talent. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member directed by the under rated frank borzage which elevates this drama Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Top Borzage, this may start out a little OTT for contemporary audiences with the allegory. But the childhood gang as parallel for adult war is portrayed with utter sincerity and conviction by the marvelous child cast. Especially Breakston as Nemecsek, who himself went on to a successful career as an actor and director, touching on similar themes in his last work. The cinematography by Joseph August is excellent, with night maneuvers carried out beautifully with a nice mix of comedy and suspense. TCM has this in light rotation, but a Warner Archive release would be great, considering the image quality already obvious. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
