Critics Consensus

Stocked with talented stars but lacking any clear idea of what to do with them, No Such Thing is ultimately far too uneven to recommend.

Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Rated: 2/4 Oct 15, 2009 Full Review Rex Reed Observer I watched the brainless insanity of No Such Thing with mounting disbelief. Apr 10, 2002 Full Review Stephanie Zacharek Salon.com No Such Thing may be far from perfect, but those small, odd Hartley touches help you warm to it. Apr 5, 2002 Full Review Dread Central No Such Thing is not a horror movie; it's an intelligent monster movie. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 10, 2006 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Instead of arresting a downward-spiralling career, Hartley's latest folly (one of the worst movies in Cannes 2001) shows what happens to an iconoclastic director when he neglects his intsinctive talent for small, quirly indies and goes uproariously big. Jeffrey P Underrated. While it is a familiar type of story in more ways than one, not at all surprised if it's based on some old fable or fairy tale, it was well done and was able to keep my focus and interest. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Not a horror movie. More like an Icelandic-American afterschool special. The monster has been around since the beginning of time. He has lived in Iceland for ages yet he has a New York accent. I made it near to the end but could not finish. My review is don't waste your time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member This was the best movie I've ever seen, maybe the best movie ever made...until they make 'The Long Walk' ...a short story by Stephen King. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Love this movie. District 9 type feel; with the monster (or alien, in District 9) seeming to represent humankind's self-created Satan. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I like Sarah Polley. this movie is one of many that show her range as an actress.
