"Not Okay" follows Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch), an aimless aspiring writer with no friends, no romantic prospects and -- worst of all -- no followers, who fakes an Instagram-friendly trip to Paris in the hopes of boosting her social media clout. When a terrifying incident strikes the City of Lights, Danni unwittingly falls into a lie bigger than she ever imagined. She "returns" a hero, even striking up an unlikely friendship with Rowan (Mia Isaac), a school-shooting survivor dedicated to societal change, and scooping up the man of her dreams, Colin (Dylan O'Brien). As an influencer and advocate, Danni finally has the life and audience she always wanted. But it's only a matter of time before the façade cracks, and she learns the hard way that the Internet loves a takedown.

As deft as “Not Okay” is for realizing the virtually vampiric nature of how trauma is absorbed in today’s culture, it completely avoids engaging with the role race plays. Go to Full Review

Not Okay is an unflinching look at not just the superficiality of influencer culture but the ghastly commodification of trauma and tragedy that raises awareness but rarely actually helps anyone. Go to Full Review

The appreciable audacity of what [writer/director Quinn] Shephard is trying to do coupled with the stellar work of a uniformly great cast make this off-beat satire worth a "like and subscribe." Go to Full Review

The film is desperate to make sure that we know that it knows just how poorly its main character is behaving. While that self-conscious quality makes for an entertaining and often clever watch, it also breeds a tangled struggle between cynicism and hope. Go to Full Review

Not only is the chemistry between Deutch and Isaac brilliant but you do get the sense that there is something stirring within Danni. Go to Full Review

Filmey M Sep 13 This movie is cringey and painful to watch from start to finish. The story is basically a rip-off of Dear Evan Hansen. The lead actress is totally unlikeable, not just as her character but also as an actress. The only good message in this movie is that it helps one understand that America's young people today are whiny and entitled and overly-helicoptered by their parents and insanely focused on useless life endeavors with their time, and it shines yet another light on why America is failing as a nation. If America's future is up to the young characters that are portrayed in this film, we should all start learning to speak Russian and Chinese right away. On a more positive note, "Not Okay" is the best possible title for this film. See more Widi L Jul 16 ZOEY doesnt sell it tho. I never once thought she was a bad person—instead, I saw her as a lost soul and felt sorry for her. While there were plenty of cringy moments, there were also some laughs and drama! This movie covers very heavy topics like terrorism & gun violence, the emotions were believable, the story/premise is unique & interesting, would recommend this film to practically anyone. Also neat to see a US film that doesn't have the "happy ending" sort of situation which plagues most movies here in the states. See more Read all reviews
