At age 103, Asayo Murakami may use a wheelchair, but when filmmaker Linda Ohama -- her granddaughter -- turns on the camera, it's evident that she's still as sharp as a tack and ready to tell the story of how she left her family in Hiroshima to become a "picture bride" to a Canadian man she'd seen only in photos. Ohama expands on Murakami's memories with still photos, archival footage and dramatic re-enactments, unearthing buried secrets and revealing a fascinating family history.

Cyndy - Synchrotherapy B Incredible story, amazing history, truly emotional Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Audience Member We watched this in Social Studies. Seeing Obachan's Garden is the best way to understand what the Japanese endured, not only by being relocated to internment camps. She was the last "picture bride"; she was full of sass, and her lifestory is woven together through renactment with actors, and interviews with her and her family. I felt like a time traveler, and Obachan touched my heart. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Read all reviews
