George Lazenby's only appearance as 007 is a fine entry in the series, featuring one of the most intriguing Bond girls in Tracy di Vincenzo (Diana Rigg), breathtaking visuals, and some great ski chases.

Variety Staff Variety Film of break-neck physical excitement and stunning visual attractions in which George Lazenby replaced Sean Connery as James Bond. Oct 13, 2008 Full Review Don Druker Chicago Reader Director Peter Hunt manages to inject some life into this 1969 exercise with a wonderful ski chase, but otherwise the film is a bore. Jun 11, 2023 Full Review Carson Timar ButteredPopcorn On Her Majesty's Secret Service remains a fine bond film. Where the story is not super engaging and the film overall does feel long, George Lazenby is fun enough as Bond and the story is just clean enough to where you can get a bit invested in it. Lanfranco C The best Bond than ever! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/08/25 Full Review Wayne K On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is what I would call the hipster Bond film; the one that people disliked back in the day, but in the years since it’s become cool to say it’s one of the best. At 2 hours and 20 minutes its far too long for what we actually get. It’s not very well made, with choppy editing and directing so bad it causes continuity issues with scenes. George Lazenby, while suave and physically imposing, is so wooden that the film keeps cutting away before he gets a chance to react after speaking a line, as if the filmmakers were embarrassed by him. The love story between Bond and Terry is forgotten about for about a solid hour, until the former needs to get out of a tough situation so the latter is parachuted in to saving him. The sequence at the allergy clinic drags on for what feels like forever and nothing that happens seems to go anywhere. The villain’s plan doesn’t even come close to succeeding, and while Terry Salvalas is a great actor and plays a cool Blofeld, he just feels wasted here. The rear projection sequences, especially those in the skiing and bobsledding scenes, look terrible and are integrated so poorly that it just feels awkward, and not confirming your adversary is dead is the villain’s thing, not Bond’s, except in this film apparently. This review feels more like a rant, but honestly it’s so hard to think of anything I’d really recommend about it. It’s not exiting enough or funny enough or cool enough or dramatic enough or sexy enough for me to really enjoy it on any level. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/25 Full Review Oliver J Critics Consensus: “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” combines a darker, more emotional tone with high-stakes action, offering a unique and surprisingly human take on James Bond that stands out in the franchise—even if George Lazenby’s debut divides fans. Review: George Lazenby steps into the tuxedo in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, bringing a more vulnerable and human side to 007. While some fans initially balked at the recast, Lazenby holds his own alongside Diana Rigg’s unforgettable Tracy, whose chemistry with Bond adds a poignant emotional depth rare in the series. The film trades some of the classic gadget-driven spectacle for real stakes: Bond faces Ernst Stavro Blofeld and the sinister forces of his Piz Gloria mountaintop lair. Director Peter R. Hunt crafts exhilarating ski chases, tense showdowns, and breathtaking Alpine vistas that elevate the action to cinematic heights. John Barry’s score, particularly the haunting We Have All the Time in the World, underscores the romance and tragedy at the film’s heart. Verdict: Dark, stylish, and emotionally resonant, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service offers a bold, humanized take on Bond that makes it one of the series’ most memorable and surprisingly tender entries. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/28/25 Full Review Joshua H Man I was surprised by how much I loved it. George Lazenby was really good as the new James Bond and I feel like he could have done with at least one more film to flesh him out, but I also feel like that's part of the charm of this film that helps it stands out. I think that the story allowed this to be the most interesting Bond has been as a character (yes Sean Connery is fantastic but I feel like there's just a lot more meat on the bone for Bond story wise in this film). The story is good, the action is good and the way this movie ends is so sudden & heartbreaking that it makes this movie stands out amongst the crowd for it's really sad ending. Yeah this is just a brilliant film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/25/25 Full Review Alaric T Agent 007 number 3 the best james bond for me but unfortunately george just play james bond movie just 1 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/26/25 Full Review Rob W My last review was way off—this is a great Bond film. Lazenby is actually pretty solid, the bobsled chase rules, and that ending is wild. Piz Gloria’s got some amazing psychedelic vibes, and We Have All the Time in the World is a banger. Easily more engaging than the last few Bond films. Great stuff. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
