Christina Newland iNews.co.uk One Night in Miami is an imagined night of politics and passions, steeped into a bittersweet brew, with performances that will endure and an aftertaste that lingers. Rated: 4/5 Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine All the acting here is remarkable. Jan 29, 2021 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian One of the captivating elements of this 110-minute movie is its one-night setting. We see the men as they were then and only then. Jan 23, 2021 Full Review Nate Tinner-Williams Black Catholic Messenger A relatively weak performance from lead Eli Goree as Ali threatened to derail the film at times (including the beginning), but was largely buoyed by the above standouts and the steadying—if not thematically stifling—dialogue from Aldis Hodge's Jim Brown. Rated: B- Aug 10, 2024 Full Review Annlee Ellingson CineWomen For people invested in social justice, the questions that [director Regina] King and her characters grapple with continue to persist today. Tracey The historic aspect as well as the music, set locations & wardrobe. You could really feel the intensity of the moment. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/21 Full Review Kurt P excellent performances. Great directing. Must see Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/23 Full Review Mateus P O filme que trata de questões pertinentes em nossa sociedade, mas não passa mão parar as hipocrisias existentes nas lutas. Adorei todos os aspectos do filme, Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/23 Full Review Molly M Regina King's directorial debut is a unique affair that follows the meeting of four prolific figures of modern history: Malcolm X, Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), Jim Brown and Sam Cooke. The film follows the aftermath of Clay's win in the fight against World Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston. Kingsley Ben-Adir plays Malcolm X, a human rights activist, a Muslim minister, and the host for the afterparty that commences in the wake of Cassius Clay's (Eli Goree) victory. At the Hampton Hotel in Miami, they are joined by singer Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and footballer/actor Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), they begin to share their thoughts and opinions about their responsibilities and rights. What happens throughout this one night will change history moving forward. King gives viewers a calm yet tense film that deals with themes and ideas like balancing your private and public life, racism, and the danger that comes along with voicing your personal opinion. Hodge, Goree, Ben-Adir and Odom Jr. all give powerful performances in their respective roles. Over the 114 minutes, they get deep into the psyche of their characters and each gives the performances of their careers. The casting is impressive; not only do these four men physically resemble their character, but Leslie Odom Jr. lends his smooth voice to the role of Sam Cooke and contributes to the film's soundtrack. Having King in the director's chair is unsurprisingly significant. Despite being snubbed at the 93rd Academy Awards, King made history by being the first black female director to have a film selected at the Venice Film Festival. Kemp Powers provides 'One Night In Miami' with a sensational screenplay. The film is based on Power's play that was written and performed in 2013. Tami Reiker brings in Malcolm X's love of photography by filming some shots through the lens of his camera. The closing image of the film is one inspired by a photograph Malcolm X took of Muhammad Ali. Terence Blanchard's score is gorgeous. It mixes well with what happens on screen and even features the oscar-nominated song 'Say It Now', sung by Leslie Odom Jr. If you want to know more about these four iconic men, films like 'Malcolm X', 'Ali' and 'Tick, Tick, Tick' should be on your watchlist. 'One Night In Miami' isn't the only film in this year's awards race that pits ideological positions against each other. Aaron Sorkin's 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' deals with racial injustice and features figures that led the civil rights movement. 'One Night In Miami' is a worthwhile film to watch. It presents viewers with an interpretation of what happened on that fateful night of February 25th 1964. The film is an example of Regina King's incredible ability to direct and produce - King should definitely be on your radar in the coming years. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Thomas M The best acting ever by an ensemble, including the best acting performance from Kingsley Ben-Adir! With the best movie song ever sung: Speak Now! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/27/22 Full Review Read all reviews
