Critics Consensus

Though it features some extravagant and entertaining moments, The Other Boleyn Girl feels more like a soap opera than historical drama.

Kevin Maher Times (UK) A hoot. Rated: 4/5 Apr 9, 2021 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator This is cliché heaped on cliché and hopelessly artificial. Aug 23, 2018 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek ... loses steam when the catfighting abruptly gives way to grim realpolitik. Feb 1, 2018 Full Review Martin Tsai New York Sun The film is marginally enjoyable in that sort of sleazy Jerry Springer fashion, but the filmmakers aren’t making a compelling case here for why their artistic license is necessarily more amusing or insightful than history itself. Alain E Apparently I just appreciated a soap opera. Thank you wise ones! Seeing how many crappy movies get 3 and 4 stars, the organized attack against this film is quite intriguing. It is available on Tubi for nothing, so if you agree it’s not worth it, you just go back and watch something else. Acting, especially by Portman and Johansson is of the first order, without any elements of melodrama. Color photography and the framing are superb. Every scene looks like it originated in an oil painting from a few centuries ago. Totally enjoyable! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Robi _ For someone not very familiar with history, this movie only left me with the impression that King Henry spent his days doing nothing but having sex, pregnancies, miscarriages, pregnancies, a girl, pregnancies, and stillbirths. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review EllaJo r This movie was disturbing 😳 and didn't seem believable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Sasha C Do not bother with this film if you enjoyed the book. The casting and acting of Henry was wildly wrong - literarily as well as historically - and even the set up to the affairs was appalling. If you want to watch a crap film about the Tudors then go for it… but if you came for a film adaptation of a wonderful book, seriously don't bother. I have just finished reading the book and I am appalled. 1.5 stars because I love Benedict Cumberbatch and the costumes were good. EDIT: have just finished it and i revoke it to half a star because even the costumes stopped being true and this whole film is ridiculous if supposedly a book adaptation. Scarlett's accent is awful and whoever cast Henry VIII should be fired. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
