Leslie Felperin Guardian All the characters are rounded, fallible and likable in equal measure, and even if the score is a bit syrupy, it’s a pleasant, engaging watch. Rated: 3/5 Mar 19, 2024 Full Review Manuel Betancourt Variety While this New York City-set divorce drama offers enough modern tweaks on a well-worn narrative, its emotional resonance remains elusive, muted even Dec 18, 2023 Full Review Beatrice Loayza New York Times A simple yet engaging melodrama... Dec 7, 2023 Full Review John Serba Decider Our Son is populated by good, well-meaning people navigating a difficult, but necessary change. It’s not profound or particularly original, but its universality is its strong point. Jun 6, 2024 Full Review Ben Turner The Pink Lens Serious, sober and sensibly intense, this is an unfrivolous and restrained drama that doesn’t quite have the emotive gut-punch that you might expect for a film about a broken home. Rated: 3/5 May 30, 2024 Full Review Sarah Manvel Critic's Notebook “Our Son” is a definitely a gay movie by, for, and about adults; and the rarity of this makes it essential viewing. Richard A A most interesting film. The granting of same sex marriage came with the same perils of straight marriage, including child care and the eternal question of who is the better parent. At first, I thought Luke Adams was a distant parent whose attitude towards Billy Porter, his husband, was that of a zillion cinematic barely present dads. Then I thought that Billy Porter was a zillion cinematic angry mates, feeling ignored and undervalued. The actor's realistic portrayals make this film the jewel that it is. The story may be old, the situation predictable, but the actors make you care about them in the here and now. It's easy to characterize this movie as being about child raising, but it is just as much about a primary relationship that has changed while they were becoming parents. The families and the friends, especially Phylicia Rashad and Andrew Rannels were wonderful, warm, real life portraits of people trying to help while also being honest with people they loved. Deftly and delicately directed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Stacey B This was a well-acted movie and I am glad it exists for representation and that I saw it. Gabriel was a rather unsympathetic and selfish character, however, and the song during the credits was awful. The supporting cast, including Andrew Ranells, Phylicia Rashad and Kate Burton, was a highlight of the film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Neil G A compelling and very contemporary story told beautifully. Excellent performances, wonderful cinematography, fantastic direction. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Kyle M Started out as a queer turn of “Kramer vs. Kramer” till it’s gotten remarkably deeper with mesmerizing drama and passionate vision uplifted by the main pair’s respective tour-de-force performances. (B+) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/27/24 Full Review Kevin T Top notch cast ! Bitttersweet but engaging storyline , definitely an issue of our times . Well worth the watch . Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/07/24 Full Review Bruce C I was pretty engaged. Afterwards I thought "I've seen this story before." Maybe I've seen Billy Porter on too many talk shows being "fierce," but the performance left a bad taste in my mouth. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
