Critics Consensus

Despite a deftly droll performance from Michael Caine, Peeper continually stumbles over its muddled plot and uncertain tone.

Colin Bennett The Age (Australia) Quite early on, the endless weak plot complications and soon become a heavy millstone around its neck. Nov 22, 2025 Full Review Mike Petryni Arizona Republic Caine is excellent. His is droll without droning, bemusing without bewildering and low-key without being lethargic. Nov 22, 2025 Full Review Scott Cain Atlanta Journal-Constitution Caine looks great in "Peeper." He also gives a beautifully modulated and believable performance. Nov 22, 2025 Full Review Lou Cedrone Baltimore Sun The plot becomes sillier by the minute, but I did like the way Caine played the detective, and I did like the pace of the film. Nov 22, 2025 Full Review Noel Taylor Ottawa Citizen This one sets out to be a brain twister... but it contorts itself out of existence. Nov 22, 2025 Full Review R.H. Gardner Baltimore Sun The movie adds up to little more than a conglomeration of frantically unfolded scenes, trying vainly to find some reason for their existence. Steve D A lot of fun with a great cast. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Ashley H Peeper is a decent film. It is about a private eye who is on a case to find the long lost daughter of a shady client. Michael Caine and Natalie Woods give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. Peter Hyams did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the humor and mystery. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie is ridiculous. Like an episode of a bad tv procedural. But Michael is always good, and Natalie looked just great. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Slight but enjoyable noir parody with charming performances and great period details. Thayer David was such a great character actor for the role of repugnant villain. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Michael Caine plays a private eye (aka Peeper) who stumbles upon an investigation that deals with a woman who unknown to her has inherited a great deal of money. Unfortunately, there seems to be a group of people out to kill him before he can find her. A lighthearted comedy that is passable entertainment, but not memorable. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Michael Caine is good, as always and he tries his best, but he can't quite save this madcap caper. It occasionally is funny, but is too chaotic to be very focused. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
