Audience Member Harry Stone (Danny Aiello) is a well-known director who has built his reputation on doing films of depth and biting satire. When he finds himself in a financial bind, however, the lure of a big check seduces him into compromising his artistic values and directing a script that no self-respecting professional would associate his name with. The Pickle (the movie- within-the-movie) is a terrible story about a giant cucumber that's actually a space ship. As the film's premiere approaches, Harry goes through twenty-four hours of intense anxiety. Paul Mazursky's The Pickle is in the tradition of The Big Picture and The Player, and, like those films, elements of this quirky, satirical farce are not ideal for general consumption. However, for those who like to laugh, The Pickle offers plenty of opportunities. (Great early 90s comedy-satire). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Yeah, it IS his worst film but even in this turkey there is a lot of charm. I just don't think he could help it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member (**): The cast is good, but the film is too silly/predictable to recommend it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Funny and weird characters. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member loved aiello in this movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member What happened? Decent director. What a cast, a great array of actors. But it's a stupid movie. It goes to extreme on it's satyrical view of Hollywood, so much so it comes across as ridiculous rather than biting and interesting. A waste. Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The Pickle is a very confused film, and many of its problems are symbolized by Mazursky's decision to include footage from the fictitious Pickle in his film. The film-within-a-film is not only unbelievably bad, but bad in an unfunny way.
