Ed Potton Times (UK) While some of the support is rather wooden, Bello Rashid is watchful and solemnly expressive in the title role, drifting into reveries as the World Service burbles away on her wind-up radio. Rated: 3/5 Oct 12, 2018 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian With a compassionate and imaginative boldness, first-time British feature director Leanne Welham has shot a film about HIV in Tanzania. Rated: 3/5 Oct 11, 2018 Full Review Trevor Johnston Radio Times Among a sterling cast of non-professionals, Bello Rashid is a standout in the title role, remaining resilient and steadfast as events bring her close to breaking point. Rated: 4/5 Jun 30, 2022 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson Flick Filosopher A wholly remarkable film, just barely fictionalized from the lives of its cast of nonprofessional actors, about the indomitable spirit of the women of East Africa. Pili's life isn't unrecognizable to women worldwide, though. Rated: 4/5 Oct 12, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A young mother, too proud to tell that she's HIV positive, struggles to gather the money she needs to start a business Although the movie is a vehicle to convince women with HIV to come out of their isolation, it also shows the harsh life of a single mother of 2 who tries to get out of misery. https://renhirratings.wordpress.com/ Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Pili is a wonderful film that tells the story of a single mother living with HIV in rural Tanzania. Pili, the title character, works the fields for less than $2 a day but dreams of a better life for herself and her family. She wants to own a stall in the local market and needs 45,000 Tanzanian shillings (just US$20!) as a deposit on the stall. Mahela, the market owner, wants Pili to have the stall and has ulterior motives. The film follows Pili as she manages her HIV while hiding her status, and tries to find the money for the deposit while being pressured by Mahela. How does she manage? The film is remarkable because it is true to life and is portrayed by an ensemble cast almost entirely made up of non-actors. Director Leanne Welham and producer Sophie Harman sought to tell the story of HIV+ women and they did a fantastic job. The film had itsTanzania premiere on November 8th, 2018 courtesy of the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam and the National Council of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania (NACOPHA) as part of the 15th anniversary of PEPFAR. Audience members living with HIV and public health practitioners raved about the film, feeling that it was accurate and compellingly. The film touches on many themes including single mothers living with HIV, poverty in lesser-resourced countries, the sexual exploitation of women, HIV stigma, why people need to know their HIV status, and how microfinance can improve lives, not to mention sisterhood, resilience, and hope. It is a must see for anyone fighting HIV/AIDS. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
