Though Play Dead tries to thrill you to death, it falls short on numerous occasions, though if you can look past its implausibility and shortcomings, you won't be left feeling cold on the slab with its quick bursts of fun and fear.

Director Patrick Lussier has taken this promising nugget of plot and fashioned it into a tense and blackly comic thriller that keeps the tension ratcheting up. He was clearly working within a fairly constrained budget, but Play Dead never feels cheap.

Play Dead (2022) Implausible, but Highly Entertaining (11,911 – 13 Sep 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) When the medical student Chloe Albright (Bailee Madison) opens the mailbox, she receives the information that her brother T.J. (Anthony Turpel) and she will be evicted from their home. When their father died, they did not receive his life insurance since his death was considered suicide. T.J. is not a bright youngster and decides to rob a pharmacy with his friend Ross (Chris Lee) using a fake gun. The robbery goes awry, Ross is shot, and T.J. flees with the robbed car and burns it out. When he meets Chloe, he recalls that Ross’ cellphone may compromise him. Chloe fakes an OD to be considered dead and be sent to the Coroner (Jerry O'Connell) in the morgue that is a fortress to recover the cellphone. But soon she learns dreadful secrets from the Coroner and his victims. How will she get out of the morgue? “Play Dead” (2022) is a slasher with an implausible, but highly entertaining plot. Jerry O'Connell is totally different from his usual roles and performs a creepy and dark coroner. The plot is funny in the development and creepy in the conclusion, but the problems are well resolved in the end. Although the unbelievable plot, “Play Dead” is very satisfactory in the end.
