An aging gold digger, Grace Herbert (Kay Francis), runs into trouble when her nefarious life becomes fodder for a newspaper article. Broke and needing to start over, Herbert flees to Miami and meets a poverty-stricken young woman, Ellen (Mildred Coles), whom she trains to be her protégé. Ellen learns the ropes, but when she falls in love with a wealthy Texan, their mission of obtaining wealth through subterfuge becomes complicated, forcing Herbert to confront her own selfishness.
